Iron Lung Reflection
I think what I really like about seeing Iron Lung is just how fresh and clean it feels. There’s no stink of Hollywood on it. No cheesey winks to the camera because a general audience needs a 4th wall tapping dialogue to “point out” how absurd it is. No product placement or carefully curtailed message or ham fisted message.
It’s not a monolith to some director or some studios reputation for doing “art house films.” Even though it’s Markipkier through and through, the focus is the story, the setting. Instead of it feeling like a Mr.Beast or Willywonka eque product where it’s famous because of the name it feels more like he’s just the guy who built the state so this story could be told.
It’s just good Existential Space Horror told as a movie.
And I hope Markiplier’s hope that this opens the door comes true.
The Backrooms. There is no Anti-Memetic Division, Dungeons and Latees. Let’s make a middle ground of small independent studios and creators who make love letters and lift up what they love for others to see. A stomping ground for people to try weird shit on small budgets that, even if they “fail” commercially, the cover their costs and help fund the next project.
Iron Lung is objectively a 3.5 out of 5. But it’s made its budget back almost three fold. That’s a success. And it was probably the most interested I’ve been in going to see a film in months.
Major blockbusters and shows I’ll follow for specific directors, I’ll consider it depending on studios (the anime studio Cloverworks has my respect and attention even if I don’t mesh with each show). But seeing just how short the credits were? And knowing that the middling success would be life changing for each and every people involved?
That’s worth a $12 popcorn and 2 hours of my time. The fact that I’m legitimately engaged and entertained for those two hours is icing.
