So, like many of you, I’ve been inside for a while and have watched a bunch of films. Like a shitload. So I’m going to mini review them in chunks of five. Let’s dive in.
VFW (2019)
This one is about a bunch of veterans trying to defend their local VFW post against drug addled mutants and the drug kingpin that supplies said drugs. If you’re a fan of old 80’s action and horror, Cannon movies, or just gory films in general, you’ll love this. This movie is hilarious, gory with spectacular practical effects, and great performances from genre veterans you’ve always wanted to see get roles like this. I really can’t praise this film enough, go check this one out.
Destroyer (2018)
Nicole Kidman plays a detective that reconnects with people from more than 15 years ago to right the wrongs of her past. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been crazy about Kidman as an actress. She’s just never really impressed me in anything I’ve seen her in and she always looks radically different from movie to movie, and not in a Gary Oldman way. But here, she is giving the performance of her career. I really believed her as this beaten down by life and regret detective. Her performance is the reason you’re watching this. It’s a well made crime drama that has some intense bursts of violence, but it’s not going to blow your mind. Check it out for one of the most underrated performances of 2018.
Valley of the Dolls (1967)
This is the classic movie about the rise and fall of three young women in show business. I really wanted to like this one, but it has just aged so poorly. It is the most generic rise and fall in show business story you’ve seen a million times before. I’m sure a lot of those stories you’ve seen before got it from here, but there isn’t anything else in this film to make things interesting. You can always tell where the story is going and the performances are on the hammy side of the spectrum. You can skip this and you won’t be missing much.
The Night is Short Girl, Walk On (2017)
Here we have an anime film following a girl known as Otome on an evening filled with partying, drinking, and other hijinks. All the while, there’s a guy trying to “run into her” and you see how his plan doesn’t always work out. The animation here is top notch and your eyes will have loads of candy to chew on throughout. This movie is funny, heartfelt, and has a lot to say about relationships between men and women. Worth checking out.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
During the Cold War, a veteran spy (Gary Oldman) is forced out of retirement to find a Soviet agent in the MI6. This is a very cerebral film that constantly has you wondering who can be trusted. It’s told in a nonlinear fashion, which does make the film a tad confusing at times and hard to follow. But if you can navigate this maze, you’ll be rewarded with a great film packed with subtle performances from some big hitters. Check it out.
4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #15: Spark one up for the stoner classic Up In Smoke (1978). This is Cheech and Chong’s first movie and one of their most popular. It’s basically about how they meet and are accidentally deported to Mexico where they agree to drive a van back to the states to make it in time for their gig. Little do they know the van is made entirely of weed and the cops are after them.
This is only the second time I’ve seen this movie, but it holds up pretty well. The humor is obviously a bit dated, but most of the jokes land and the soundtrack is pretty great if you dig 70’s music. I don’t need to tell you that loads of weed is smoked in this, it’s a Cheech and Chong movie. Roll a fat one and enjoy.
4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #12: Mix yourself a White Russian and settle in for The Big Lebowski (1998). Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire with the same last name and has his rug ruined. Looking for reimbursement, he grabs his bowling team to help him out.
When it comes to stoner movies, this is one of the best there is. Hell, when it comes to comedy movies in general this is one of the best ever made. The Dude is an all time great film character and THE prototypical stoner. Laid back to a fault and never taking anything seriously until it’s too late. I don’t need to tell you this is a classic, you already know that. I’m just here to remind you that it’s still as good as the last time you saw it.
4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #11: We get blasted in the past with Dazed and Confused (1993). This film follows a bunch of teenagers on their last day of school in 1976. This is the movie that launched many careers including Milla Jovovich, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey. But does it hold up after all this time?
Here’s is another movie that’s a first time watch for me that’s been on my list for ages. Out of all the movies set in high school I’ve seen, this is one of the better ones. It’s filled with interesting and fun characters, loads of pot, and a pretty good classic rock soundtrack. Give this one a watch if you haven’t seen it.
4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #13: We go on the run with Pineapple Express (2008). Process server Dale and his pot dealer Saul must go on the run from the cops after Dale witnesses Saul’s boss kill a rival while waiting to serve him papers. Being on the run leads them on a hilarious adventure to clear their names.
This is a movie I’ve seen more times than I can count. It’s got loads of bloody action, lots of joints smoked, and a pretty good soundtrack. It does try a bit too hard to be funny at times, but most of the jokes land. Well worth watching if you’ve never seen it and worth a revisit if it’s been a while.
