Why you should ditch Lightroom and use Fuji’s film simulations
99% of my photos that I post are not edited in any way. They are jpegs straight out of the camera. I shoot with a Fujifilm X-E3 and before that I shot with a Fujfilm X100s. The great thing about Fujifilm is the great colors that come straight out of the camera. These colors are even better when coupled with Fuji’s amazing film simulation color profiles. There are several to choose from but my favorites, and what I use 99% of the time, are Classic Chrome for color photography and Acros for black & white photography. These profiles are just enough to give your photos a post processed look without needing to spend time in front of the computer trying to edit hundreds of photos. I do not enjoy, and really am not interested in, post processing my photos. Here are some of my reasons why I think you should consider ditching Lightroom (or any post processing software) and use Fujifilm’s film simulation profiles.
As mentioned above, Fuji’s film simulations have beautiful colors right out of the camera. Especially Classic Chrome & Acros.
You don’t have to spend your time editing photos on your computer. Just go out and shoot. The fun of photography is going out with your camera, not spending hours editing RAW photos on the computer.
Will allow you to simplify. Think of it as similar to shooting with film. Go out with the intention of only using one or two film simulations for the day. This is what it whas like in the analog days when you had to choose your film prior to going out to shoot.
Will allow you to save money. Lightroom is now a $10 month subscription. $120/year. $600 over 5 years. That’s a flight to a great destination.
Will allow you to save storage space. You don’t need to shoot RAW and worry about how to manage, store, and back up those large files. Jpegs are easier to store and manage.
Will make you a better photographer by forcing you to learn to get it right in camera. By shooting jpeg and not relying on post processing you’ll become a better photographer. You will learn to use and adjust aperture, shutter speeds, ISO, exposure compensation, and composition on the fly based on conditions. Just like in the film days.
Limitations breeds creativity. This one is more subjective, but I think taking away the option of endless post processing will force you to get creative and allow you to develop your own style of shooting. Just like limiting yourself to one or two lenses (or an x100V), limiting your ability to endlessly process your photos will breed creativity.
These are some of the reasons I very rarely post process anything that I shoot. 99% of my photography that I share is straight out of my Fujifilm camera using Classic Chrome or Across film simulations. I know this may be a controversial point of view in the photography community, but it works for me. Would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
