On Wednesday, we packed our bags, said goodbye to Matagalpa and began our journey to Limón, Nicaragua. When we arrived, we were welcomed by another one of our partner clinics, FIMRC, as well as by our wonderful host families. We spent the rest of the day getting orientated by FIMRC as to their mission and how we can help them, as well as how they can help us. Yesterday we split up and half of our group went on prenatal visits and half went on diabetic patient visits with FIMRC. In the afternoon, we all convened and joined FIMRC on a mobile clinic visit to a rural community called Cucula. Afterwards, we all cooled off from the very hot and humid day at a beautiful beach, swimming and climbing Mag Rock, a huge rock that stands in the Pacific ocean off the coast of Popyoyo, Nicaragua!

Talia Takes on the Clinic

So as some of you may or may not know, I’ve had this nasty cough for the past 2+ weeks. Today, instead of going to the office, I jumped on a boda boda and headed to the clinic in Kyiholo. 

Because I am a mzungo (aka a white person), I was able to skip the line and get seen a lot faster than many of the other women waiting. At station two (where they take your vitals), I found out that I had a slight fever and also that theoretically I’ve lost weight since getting here. Because I had a fever, they send me down to the lab to get a malaria test.

The malaria test was quick and almost painless. I got an RDT, which stands for Rapid Diagnostic Test; these only take about five minutes to work and a pin prick on blood. This was definitely another perk of being a mzungo because everyone else there had a traditional microscope test done. As everyone suspected, I definitely don’t have malaria. They don’t do TB tests at the clinic, or I’m sure I would’ve gotten one of those, too.

After that, I went to see the doctor, a sweetheart named Irene. She listened to my lungs and my nasty cough for a couple minutes. Despite Amanda’s insistence, Irene diagnosed me with Bronchitis and prescribed me to take 500mg of amoxicillin three times a day. So I should be better in no time at all!
