Final Map Coming To Splatoon Tomorrow
Final Map Coming To Splatoon Tomorrow
It’s been confirmed that a new map is coming to Splatoon tomorrow at 6:00 pm PT. The map will be called “Ancho-V Games” and take place inside of a game development office building. The stage will also feature fans in the shape of PCs that can be sprayed with ink to raise platforms. The stage seems really creative and it will definitely be cool to check it out tomorrow, although it is sad to…

Final Map - Rationale
Based on my original brief where I would produce both an online and printable version of the map I have come up with this solution. The online version is an interactive PDF that provides people with extra information by selecting different areas on the map. The map contains the essential places as provided in the brief supporting material.
Audience
The target audience for the map is the 18 - 35 age group. I based this on research published in the ACT Population projections for Suburbs and Districts 2007 - 2019, ACT Government. Due to the larger demographic of the Fraser electorate being 18 -35 the map has been designed for this age group.
Colours
The map is bright and colourful as the main target audience is 18 - 35.
Purple is a colour liked by many young people and has an uplifting sense to it. It is thought to signify and encourage creativity which ties in well with the illustrated icons used in the map. The green represents the ecology of Canberra, also known as 'The Bush Capital'. The shade of green I chose is a a bright vibrant green adding to the youthful energy of the particular age group.

Illustrated icons
I have used illustrated icons that represent each of the places to provide a playful approach to the map. The illustrations are clearly hand drawn which add to the youthful look and feel of the map. The illustrations are intended to engage the user visually by not only identifying places by name but also with the visual link.
The Map layout
I have used a simplistic style in the streets and display of where suburbs are located. This is purely more to provide the user with context as to where places are located. Due to the bright colours used in the map and the illustrated icons the street and suburb layout has been kept simple so as to allow the important information to stand out more. The map of the particular areas of the essential places has been placed onto a slightly 3D shape of the Fraser electorate. This is to give a sense of the Fraser Electorate as a separate entity.
Due to the cluster of places located in the city centre area I have provided a zoomed in section in the top corner that allows for easy display of the numerous places located in this area. Within the main map only the numbers have been displayed and the illustrated icons have not been used here as there is not enough space.
The green areas represent the bushland and grass areas.
The Key
I have used a very simple key listing the places in a two column format in an area of the map that is not critical for the display of places. This needed to be kept clean and simple due to the busy elements of the map.
The Icons
The icons have been done in red circles with white text for the numbers. This colour contrasts quite well with the map making them easy to read and find. Being red they will not blend into the map.
Summary
I went through a range of processes before deciding on the style of the streets and suburbs. It was difficult to accurately draw the roads exactly as they are so I looked at a number of mapping sites to assist me with getting an accurate layout of the streets and suburbs of the area. Using these maps I edited and customised it to have a similiar illustrated feel as the icons do. Given more time I would redo the major streets as they are slightly blurry compared to the suburb text. It is quite a busy map with the inclusion of the illustrations, however I think that is acceptable for the 18 -35 age group who are already used to dealing with complex information. The interactive PDF provides more information which would be useful if on a website or downloaded onto a computer. My aim was to create a map that was colourul and illustrative which I think I have achieved. There is room for refinement with maybe limiting the colour palette to allow the icons to stand out more. The illustrated icons have not worked out how I had envisaged largely due to the clusters of places in two places and no places of interest in the other areas. The original intention was to have illustrations basically covering the whole map.
