Their meetings were infrequent, but treasured all the same. The trainer leans forward to place a kiss on Latias’ head. She liked to think the pokemon thought the same...

But this reunion would be a short one. A voice boomed behind her, from the entrance of the mall. Gudako glances over her shoulder, then back to Latias, who disappeared from sight. She loses the pokemon from her touch. A sigh, but smile not broken, she turns around to wave to another ‘legendary figure’. “ I’m over here!” Gudako calls. “ Did you find what you were looking for?!”

There is a vacancy inside the woman’s throat, a pause carrying about the air as her hands hold one another, thumbs slowly rubbing the other with delicate grace. And when she speaks, there is no sarcastic speech, no playful smugness the two may share time and time again. It is grounded, sincere, and concerned.

“I’ve asked you this before, Bowser, and I will ask it again. Have you ever tried branching out? You know what I mean when I say this. While you can perceive it in whatever way most comfortable to you, you understand the truth behind my words. Power is many things, but never has it been everything the universe has to offer. You can step out of yourself and understand that, right?”

...Right? “I could bend planets to my will and whim, I have that choice. I’ve been gifted tremendous power through my eons of existence, yet not once has that thought passed my mind. Have you ever considered why? There are things I care about that power would not aid. A terrifying show of strength would frighten my children, not make them feel safe. An unsafe terrain is never suitable for a child. When it cannot be helped, that is when you use your power to change that scenario for the better. The strongest side would be too wrapped up in keeping its iron-forged grip on the territory fought for instead of the homestead desperately pining for the attention of a similar caliber. Love, care, personal respects, emotional safety...”

That’s…a ghost? Not to say Bandana Dee was disappointed! Oh no! Just a little surprised, to say the least. Perhaps he wasn’t expecting them to be so bashful on a first impression…or to resemble something of a floating marshmallow…or both? Maybe it was both.

“P-Penguin face…? Oh! You mean his royal majesty, don’t you?”

Well, who else would the fiery-haired koopa be referring to? Bandana Dee couldn’t really recall of any other “villainous kings” he has sworn his undying loyalty to.

Now, the ghost question…

“I-Uh…I guess I can let you in on something, but we can’t let the king get word I told you this, okay? I dunno what he’d do to me if he found out I did.”

One last check to see if the coast was really clear…Yup. Not another soul in sight. Perfect to spill out a secret. Bandana Dee leaned in close and spoke in a volume softer than his usual, cheery one. “Dedede used to have ghosts in his army, but he had a bit of an…accident. They gave him a bit of a spook the first night he recruited them. No one got a wink of sleep that night and the ghosts were out of the castle the next morning! Haven’t seen a ghost ever since!”
