Response to Julian’s Final

Reading to myself was honestly frustrating because I kept getting interrupted by my coughing. So I decided not to read aloud anymore and I read to myself in my head. I felt like once I started reading it in my head I imagined someone else’s voice reading it instead of my own.

I wonder what it would have sounded like if the whole class read their poems at the same time. In addition, I wonder how you would expand on this project or concept in the future.

Juhani Pallasmaa - The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses

Pallasmaa.J (2005) suggests that ‘the timeless task of architecture is to create embodied and lived existential metaphors that concretise and structure our being in the world.’ This reinforces his ideas about sensuality and human experience. Pallasmaa.J (2005) goes on to talk about how humans make roots on earth to concretise their being through architecture and how recently in the last few decades architects have turns to materials that show no signs of age and time. Because of this need for timelessness due to a fear of death, contemporary architecture is moving towards a ‘de-sensualisation and de-eroticisation of the human relation to reality’ as we are distancing ourselves away from our emotions and existential reality. This reinforces why Pallasmaa.J (2005) believes ‘we are made to live in a fabricated dream world.’ 

As a consequence of all this, Pallasmaa.J (2005) suggests architecture is now an endangered art form due to the weakening embodied experience of time and sensuality threatened by political, cultural, economic, cognitive and perceptual developments.

Week 11: Ch 30, 31, 32

This week’s readings are a good summary of the class it relates a lot of themes that we talked about in class, like identity, connectivity, access, anonymity, The quote that i wish to explore upon more this week: “In late modernity, ‘self actualization is understood in terms of a balance between opportunity and risk’ Both the opportunities and risks arise because self actualization is a social process. Selves are constituted through interaction with others and, for today’s teenagers, self-actualization increasingly includes a careful negotiation between the opportunities (for identity, intimacy, sociability) and risks (regarding privacy misunderstanding, abuse) afforded by internet-mediated communication” (Livingstone 2010, 478). This quote represents everything about this course but also everything about the internet it is indeed, filled with risk and opportunity. Risks can include identity theft, Opportunity can include world change. I really enjoyed reading these chapters, they resumed very well the class. This quote also indicated the interaction of identity construction online.

The Final Response

So the Tumblr posts I decided to re-blog were Juxtaposition and Keyword. For the Juxtaposition post I really enjoyed how she gave examples of how her room was juxtaposition and how the she came to the conclusion that this term was a big part of what describes her space. She mentions how she didn’t think any of the texts of resonated with her space. I can’t say she’s wrong because I also can’t think of a text but I do think a lot of the concepts she mentions at the end can be tied to her space. I feel like she has the freedom to do whatever she pleases in her room from décor to the layout of her room. She has the choices present everyday when she enters her space. She has the choice to do what she wants whether it is to watch Disney movies, paint her nails, do her make-up or even take shots in her room. And of course she is a woman so that applies to her automatically. :)

The reason why I decided to reblog Keyword post was because I felt like it was relatable to my post. The word she chose to describe her room was Freedom like me. I like how she starts her post saying that at the beginning she thought that her room was quiet and a place to do homework but since these assignments she has changed her mind. I enjoyed that she did not only have one text but three texts she related to her space. It helped me realized that my space also relates with the text Corners. I enjoyed reading these post because it was interesting to see that how people saw their space differently now at the end of this assignment.
