so this isn’t an urgent question(it’s also a suggestion for some others), but what do I look for in a top surgery surgeon? Like what are good signs that they’ll be a good surgeon? Also for those in the Charlotte NC there’s a group called the Trangender Healthcare Group that has all sorts of good folk (I’m currently looking at the surgeons on that list)
i checked out the before/after on transbucket to see how things looked; and i checked to see whose before pictures looked like my “current body” so i could guess who might have similar results to me. (lots of super thin folks wouldn’t compare well, nor would folks who were really perky). When it came time to actually talk to the docs/their staff, i wanted someone who was responsive (if i can’t get ahold of them when things are boring and i’m just seeking a consult, how confident am i that i’ll be able to get in touch if it’s post-op and i have an important question or i wonder if something is an emergency? i wasn’t going to risk it. I wanted someone who respected my input, so i was very upfront about what i wanted, my needs. And i screened the sites. Did they use any icky language, outdated phrasing did the way the doctor describe themselves make me feel at ease (do they seem to feel like they are “saving poor trans folk” or are they just lending a hand in our path to uncovering our real selves). All of this is things you can use to pre-screen even before you get a chance to sit down in the consult, more or less. Ask around in the local community to see who friends have used. When you sit down in consult, make sure you feel like they’re answering your questions in a way you understand. if you don’t, ask them to clarify, and be sure you get the clarification. they might be a great doctor but if they’re talking a foreign language to you (medicalese) when you need them to talk simple language, your care will suffer because you won’t be 100% SURE what to do. What else have people used successfully to find a good surgeon?mod mayhem
