Thrawn: *lost his memory due to purgil hyperspace jump* I have short term memory loss.

Thrawn: Let's play a game!

Ezra: All right.

Thrawn: I'm thinking of something orange, and it's small...

Ezra: It's me.

Thrawn: Right!

(Later)

Thrawn: I'm thinking of something orange and small...

Ezra: It's me again.

Thrawn: All right mr. smarty-pants.

(Later)

Thrawn: It's orange and small and has black-

Ezra: Me, and the next one -just a guess- me.

Thrawn: Now that's just scary.

......

Thrawn: Just keep flying! Just keep flying! What do we do? We fly!

@autumnwoodsdreamer had this idea that Ezra would also paint a mural but that the key difference would be that he paints Sabine in the center.

Sabine placed Ezra in the centre of the mural as a memorial and because his sacrifice saved Lothal. But Ezra knows his sacrifice wouldn’t have happened or held in the long-run if it weren’t for Sabine. She let him go, helped cover his escape, and she pulled the final trigger when he was gone. He could leave knowing she’s going to protect his world for him when he can’t.

#this came to me when I saw selene’s post this morning with the mural moment put to the lyrics from ‘anywhere’

And, well, since she mentioned this in the tags... 😅

Later in the day I heard this song, Faith, and I loved it as a complementary Ezra pov to go with the Anywhere post.

But! Faith is a duet that has a verse for both the boy and the girl in the story, so it didn’t quite work the way I wanted it to. Then with autumn's beautiful vision above, here's where my musical theater brain went:

During the intro, there's a split screen as the two of them enter and appraise their blank canvases. They're both wearing space headphones (so that the music is diegetic), and they activate them as the singing is just about to begin.

Cut to single screen - just Sabine's side - as the male sings about the female. She walks up to the debris/canvas and begins sketching/painting, but all of the shots are close or on her directly so that no details are revealed.

See the girl with the diamonds in her shoes? Yeah She walks around like she's got nothing to lose Ya she's a go-getter, she's everybody's type She's a queen of the city but she don't believe the hype She's got her own elevation, holy motivation So I wrote some letters out in big bold type I got faith in you baby, I got faith in you now And you've been sucha, sucha good friend to me Know that I love you somehow I met you, hallelujah, I got faith

Swap screens to Ezra's location. He walks up to his canvas/rock race as the female begins to sing about the male, but like Sabine's scene, as he gets to work, the audience can't see any of the details.

See the boy with the Stevie Wonder swag? Ain't got a clue, all the magic that he has He's a go-getter, he's everybody's type Gonna make it my mission, make him feel alright He's a twelve on a ten point, rockin' out to his joint Just say the word cause I could sing all night I got faith in you baby, I got faith in you now And you've been sucha, sucha good friend to me Know that I love you somehow (love you somehow) I met you, hallelujah, I got faith

Then there's time elapse footage of them painting, covering different days and times as they work on their projects, switching between the two settings. The energy is building. They start dancing a bit as they work.

Ezra and Sabine are rocking out now, singing into paintbrushes and dancing and such. We can feel their elation as the project is coming close to completion.

The music pauses on a beat - a hard transition where we go back to the original split screen, zoomed out as we were in the beginning, only this time we can see the completed murals, side-by-side with the difference of the main subject.

It's silent as they stand before their finished pieces - alone.

Now this could be some time during the Waiting to achieve the same gravity autumn spoke of. They react to the pieces - exhausted and emotional - collapsing to the floor as the final Big Notes ring out.

OR

To match the more joyful tone of the song, the hard cut to them alone is some time much later. During the silence, they both approach their paintings. Then it cuts to Sabine and it's the Epilogue, she strokes his face, puts her helmet on and leaves.

The man alone sings.

-faith!

Another pause. Cut to Ezra. He tips his head to the side as he considers her. He smiles.

“See you soon, Sabine.”

The full choir sings.

-faith!

Go to black on the final beat.

If you think about it, Finding Ezra would have functioned really well as a standalone movie.

It never had to be Rebels S5 because the Epilogue didn’t set up Finding Ezra as a continuation of Rebels itself. What it did set up was a whole new story for Sabine and Ahsoka beyond both of their previous series.

So even though Ahsoka and Sabine were pre-existing characters who took off on a journey to find another pre-existing character based on a cliffhanger from a pre-existing animated show, the story itself was all new. There was very little, if anything, the audience needed to know from either Rebels or The Clone Wars in order to go on that journey because the journey is the new story that’s happening right now.

If Ahsoka had never existed (at least not in its current form), then a good writing team along with the action and special effects efforts of the Mando movie could’ve made Finding Ezra a satisfying, self-contained film for both fans and the GA even with two (previously animated) tv show characters in the lead.

Ezra: Yeah, I see a light.

Thrawn: A light?

Ezra: Yeah. I see a light.

Thrawn: Yeah, I see it too.

Ezra: Hey, Force, am I dead?

Thrawn: No, no. I see it, too.

[ship flies closer to the light]

Ezra: What is it?

Thrawn: It's so... *pretty*.

Ezra: [mesmerized] I... I'm feeling... happy, which is a big deal... for me.

Thrawn: I want to touch it...

[ship touches it; the light bobs quickly away]

Thrawn: Oh!

Ezra: Hey, come back. Come on back here. I'm gonna get ya.

Thrawn: Come here.

Ezra: [singing] I'm gonna fly with you...

Thrawn: I'm gonna get ya. I'm gonna get ya.

Ezra: [singing] I'm gonna be your best friend...

[a big scary space-fish looms into view]

Ezra: ...Good feeling's gone.

Ezra, Thrawn: AHH!
