I made this Gunne Sax-inspired dress with custom fabrics that I designed. The fabric is based on the famous vintage Gunne Sax unicorn print, but in an aqua blue colorway.

Dress design is based on the vintage Simplicity pattern 8908, though I drafted my own pattern for this dress. It features yoke detailing and rosette buttons on the bodice, and darling side ties at the waist. Full double flounce hem fit for a princess. Dress has already sold.

After nearly a year in the making, I completed this hand-sewn dirndl-inspired dress, modeled after Austrian/Bavarian folkwear. The bodice has hand embroidery in florals and tiny unicorn foals

on a base of olive green linen. It laces up the front in a traditional corset style, and includes boning, piping, and princess seams. This was a very ambitious project for my skill-level, and I had to learn basic embroidery before attempting it. I used a traditional dirndl pattern for the bodice, which I had to modify to suit the look I was going for. The skirt of the dress is made entirely with my own custom designed fabric in a vintage unicorn print (Gunne Sax fans will recognize it.) The dress is, in fact, a hybrid of my love for vintage 1970s Gunne Sax and my favorite contemporary designer, Lena Hoschek. I am particularly smitten with Lena's Traditions collection, and have always wanted to attempt my own dirndl-styled dress. I love the earthy look and feel of linen, but wanted to give my version a fairytale touch by using my unicorn fabric, and adding embroidered details. In favor of wearability I left the traditional apron off of my design, as I didn't want the dress to look too much like a costume. Overall, I love how this project turned out!
