My book, Cerebral Palsy: ‘A Story’ has given me a voice, an understanding for the first time of a life struggled, of a life lived, but more importantly, an understanding of my experiences and why what happened to me, happened.
In my current book, I write in a way that brings understanding to all of us, not just me. I tap into the universe to write, to bring an insight to the issues that affect us all. Being stuck in my head over the years has brought about clarity.
It is okay to accept that we may never fully heal from trauma, particularly trauma that has been allowed to span decades, although we may heal from certain aspects of it. Healing is different to each of us, one size doesn’t fit all.
But energy and attitude go a long way to helping us bring understanding and clarity on the issues we’re still holding on to. I was under no illusion as a small child that my unique circumstances would be difficult to get past. Where I think I am comfortable on how I got to this place, my gut tells me I still have a way to go.
Fifty-eight years on and how I got to this place doesn’t feel easier, but through writing, and a changed attitude, my experiences feel slightly easier. It’s clear I still have a way to go.
