If you ever want to feel good about your progress in a certain skill, stop and think about how you'd break down the steps to teach it to a complete novice. I was fingerloop braiding some spiral cord and thought 'Oh, my buddy's coming over next week for craft day, maybe he'll want to learn...' and I realized how I was just doing the different actions without thinking.
Followed instructions from a 15th century manual and made myself a cute medieval headband 🤭
here's all the fingerloop braids i made today! i've made several others but i was really happy with today's results. they are all bracelet length, with loops on one side and two long fish-tail braided tails on the other, so they can be tied for a variety of wrist sizes :~)
top to bottom:
five strand flat braid in browns & greens
seven strand flat braid in rainbow
seven strand flat braid in shades of blue
seven strand flat braid in a slightly different rainbow
eight strand bend/twist, one "side" in two shades of red and the other in two shades of blue
seven strand flat braid in an attempt at the lesbian flag colors (will go for darker pinks next time!)
another blue seven strand flat braid
six strand bend/twist, one "side" in black and the other in rainbow (this effect was achieved by making each colorful loop out of two colors)
i learned about fingerloop braiding and had my first try on saturday, it's tuesday now. i have become a little obsessed. i've learned a lot today about starting order of colors, how to tension better, and tricks for getting more colors than strands!
i encourage everyone looking for a fun, inexpensive, satisfying hobby to pick this up. all it takes is at least five strands of thread, an anchor (safety pin works), and your hands! it's very repetitive, once you get the pattern and rhythm down it FLIES. for me it's like stimming, very relaxing.
please try something new, like fingerloop braiding!!! you can make a whole bracelet in like 30 minutes!!!!!!
A made another komebukuro! This is similar to the last one I made - except I did ninepatch sides and this time I added a pocket :D All hand sewn again, and once again made the cords using finger braiding.
I needed a cord to make a necklace with this cool cross from the antique store, so I looked up medieval cord patterns and found this great tutorial from Morgan Donner on YouTube! It might not look like anything crazy but it took a solid hour of struggle before I could even start braiding 😭
Anyways, I highly recommend this if you're looking for a new craft to try out
I made a little sewing helper from some leftover fabric of my skirt, some papercutouts, and a lot of the thread-and-really-small-fabric scrap-waste that you always get while sewing:
I am thinking I might fingerloopbraid a little something to put around the edge; looks a little rough like this, don't you think?
