Day 03

Lazy day (thanks migraines).

Since Finnish for Foreigners I focuses on spoken finnish (puhekieli) I decided to learn the pronouns before actually starting its first lesson. I know that in the second volume the author will teach kirjakieli but I KNOW I’ll mess things up and considering I’m a Paranoid Person & Anxious Student, why not learn the way in which finnish pronouns are presented in both spoken and written finnish?

The book doesn’t really start its lesson (kappale) showing the pronouns and how to use it, rather starting with dialogues using almost exclusively the puhekieli form for the third singular person (se), I - once again - looked at Katya’s YouTube channel for a video explaining the pronouns.

Her videos are very useful and the differences of puhekieli and kirjakieli when it comes to pronouns aren’t that complicated. Before even starting this journey I used to watch some of her videos to learn the names of the months, weekdays and colors. It’s by far one of my favorite finnish channels.

I loved the fact that Finnish doesn’t differentiate “she” and “he”. I also found another video in which I learned more about pronouns:

To avoid having another barely productive day I also checked Katya’s videos for ordinal and cardinal numbers and... how terrifyng aglutinative languages can be. And to think that I used to mock french for the heresy of quatre-vingt-dix-neuf...

From eleven to nineteen, the numbers are formed from the matching digits, adding the -toista suffix at the end.

11 – yksitoista

12 – kaksitoista

13 – kolmetoista

14 – neljätoista

15 – viisitoista

16 – kuusitoista

17 – seitsemäntoista

18 – kahdeksantoista

19 – yhdeksäntoista

The numbers for tens (20, 30, up to 90) are constructed this way:

20 – kaksikymmentä

30 – kolmekymmentä

40 – neljäkymmentä

50 – viisikymmentä

60 – kuusikymmentä

70 – seitsemänkymmentä

80 – kahdeksankymmentä

90 – yhdeksänkymmentä

In Finnish, the numbers 21–29, 31–39, 41-49 and so on are constructed as in English:

21 - kaksikymmentäyksi

22 - kaksikymmentäkaksi

23 - kaksikymmentäkolme

24 - kaksikymmentäneljä

25 - kaksikymmentäviisi

26 - kaksikymmentäkuusi

27 - kaksikymmentäseitsemän

28 - kaksikymmentäkahdeksan

29 - kaksikymmentäyhdeksän

Hundreds

To get the teens, sata is added to the base number (plural sataa).

100 is sata, 200 is kaksisataa and so on.

To get the thousands, tuhat is added to the base number (plural tuhatta).

1000 is tuhat, 2000 is kaksituhatta and so on.

So, I’m gonna need someone to explain to me who the Fins let their numbers go from ”yksi” and ”neljä” turn into ”kolmessa miljoonassa neljässäsadassakuudessakymmenessäneljässä tuhannessa yhdeksässäsadassakuudessatoista” (it means “in three million four hundred and sixty-four thousand nine hundred and sixteen” by the way)
