“Run for it!” (for the drabble challenge <3)

“Run for it!”

Finaly “Finny” Fernley was not a runner. He was acutely aware of this as he ran barefooted over the cobbled walkways of Gilneas. He cursed the day he decided to go bereft of shoes. The soles of his feet beat against the ground with great thumps, but not louder than the heavy breathing and growling of the hulking Worgen at his heels. He attempted multiple incantations as he ran for his life, trying to conjure the fire that would surely save his life. But he was breathing too hard, too unfocused, too inexperienced. All he could do was run as hard as he could and pray. Pray to whatever god or deity or demon was listening. He swore he could feel hot breath and the scrape of teeth on his neck. He was sure if he wavered or turned around the Worgen would tear him to pieces. Rocks and debris pounded into the soles of his feet, drawing blood and making tears well in his eyes. But he continued. The hot breath on his neck seemed to abate. The clatter of nails on cobblestone dissipated. He no longer felt like doom was imminent. Finny dared to chance a look over his shoulder, and found no hulking beast ready to tear out his throat. Finny collapsed on the ground, pulling his knees up to his chest while he let out a heaving sob. He knew he should find cover, but he couldn’t. All his thoughts were on his mother, who had been at work when the city was sacked, and on his aching feet and screaming muscles. He was too busy wallowing in his emotions to notice the Worgen emerge from the alleyway. It leapt onto Finny, sinking it’s horrendous teeth into the meat of his shoulder. The last thing Finny remembered was burning terrible pain and the glow of those feral orange eyes. He awoke in an unfamiliar body and a roar of flame, singeing the ruddy brown fur off of his foreign clawed hands. Through his scattered thoughts, the man beneath realized something terrible.He was turned.

16. Is there anyone who makes them feel inferior?

Answering for: Finlay “Finny” Fernley 

One might answer in a variety of ways; a superior commander, doubt, the sheer weight of their responsibilities. Especially when that person can turn into a hulking, fire-flinging Worgen. But no, Finny does not feel inferior in the face of doubt, of responsibilities, or anything like that. His mother is what makes him feel the most inferior. Yes, a man who can wield fire and turn into a werewolf is the most scared, feels the most small in the face of his mother. His mother is nice, sure. Loving and doting like any mother should be, but she has a side to her that makes Finny feel like he is nothing but a speck. She knows how to push his buttons. She can push buttons that Finny thought he had well hidden away under a veil, things he sealed behind walls as strong as steel. But his mother knows.She knows how to tear her son down to his foundations, and that’s a power Finny doesn’t want anyone to wield. The volatile nature of his mother is much like the nature of the fire he wields, but he can’t control this, and that scares him. His mother can be the picturesque version of maternal love one moment, but if Finny steps a toe out of line, that terrifying nature shows its face and makes Finny feel so small.Sometimes the things that make us feel the most inferior are the ones closest to us.

Race: Afflicted Gilnean Human (Worgen)

Currently found in: Stormwind City, mage district 

Are they known?: Only if you like side-show attractions, Finny makes money on the side performing silly magical “feats.”

Languages: Common

Eyes: Amber

Class: Fire Mage

Height: Short and dumpy as a human, only slightly taller as a Worgen

Hair: Red hair in human form, and silvery gray as a Worgen.

Age: Adult (Younger, later 20s)

Notable Scars and Marks: A few burn scars on his hands and arms from his time mastering pyromancy post-affliction. 

Tattoos and Piercings: None! Finny is too scared to get tattoos or piercings. 

At a glance: A shy, awkward man/Worgen. He emanates a warm aura. More than likely has his nose stuck in a book. Or simply: A Dog In a Hat

What to expect: A humble, shy Worgen looking for adventure like the heroes in the novels he reads. He loves to talk about books, adventure, magic, and setting things on fire. He will more than likely try to cajole you into taking him adventuring. He has never been very far outside Gilneas/Stormwind.

Tol Barad, The Hinterlands, Swamp of Sorrows?

Has your muse ever committed a crime? Were they caught?: Answering for: Anoki Grovestep and Kayeshi Lotusfang Anoki, in his younger years, stole rations for himself. This was when he was a young, wily bull. I won’t try to rationalize why he did it. It was bad. He was hungry. Was he starving? No, he wasn’t. He had no excuse other than to eat more. He wasn’t caught, but he’s learned from his mistakes in the past.Kayeshi, however, spent most of her youth stealing, robbing, marauding, etc. Halfhill and surrounding towns. She was involved with a bad group of kids, that grew into a bad group of adults. They’d steal produce, money, and other valuables. The townsfolk knew of the band of ruffians, but didn’t know their identities. One day, one of her cohorts was caught, and gave them her name. She was sentenced to work hard labor in the fields to repay what she stole, so long as she would never steal again. She reluctantly agreed. Of course, she didn’t keep this promise. Inevitably, she was caught again. The villagers agreed it would be best if she left and never returned. She was evicted, and was left to her own devices to travel Pandaria. I wrote something about her eventually stealing from some Goblins, who gave her the choice to either work for them, or die. Of which she chose to live. 

Does your muse have a preferred mount or animal companion?:Answering for: Anoki, Kayeshi, Finny, Sechen, Mourai.Anoki has a yak named Nancy that he caught and tamed himself in the Kun-Lai mountains. He has a cat named Marble, who lives at his home in the Jade Forest, as well as a goat named Beth who also resides there. He has some monk friends that take care of his animals while he’s away. He recently rescued a terrestrial turtle who was stranded on a log floating down a river. He has yet to name him!Kayeshi has a parrot which she picked up at a market in Booty Bay, while she was traveling with her Goblin employers. She named him Grabby, and she helps her pickpocket. Finny has a orange tabby cat that follows him around. He has a warm, emanating aura that animals are sometimes attracted to. If he’s in his Worgen form, the cat keeps its distance, but if he shifts back it’s all over him. He doesn’t know where it came from, but he calls the kitty Orange. Sechen has a turtle named Baiju. It’s one of the big Dragon Turtles the the Pandaren use.Mourai has a tiny electric croc named Tubbs. On one of her journeys, it kind of just…showed up? It really likes her electric magic, and gobbles up her spells. She has to be careful that he’s not around when she really needs her spells. He’ll just slurp it up like spaghetti. 

What was the darkest point of your muse’s life?Answering for: Anoki, Layde LoveboltAnoki’s was his time after he was rescued from the POW camp. It took a lot of mental and physically recovery to even remotely return to the man he once was. He was in a state of mental and physical anguish for years afterwards, and still struggles with it. Of course, then, so was the time after his son died. But he had more mental resolve to make things right. It spurred him on to get better.Layde’s was when she ended up following in her mother’s footsteps. Her mother was addicted to some not-so-good things, and was, well, a sex worker. Her boyfriend enabled her bad decisions, and it spiraled out of control. If it weren’t for her adoptive uncle, Layde would probably be dead, or worse. It was a huge struggle for her to climb out of the hole she dug for herself, and the withdrawals were terrible, but she did it. She’s now a jewel crafter making enough to live a comfortable life.

The Fool, The High Priestess, The Chariot & Strength?

The Fool: When has your character been excited to start a new journey?Answering for: Finlay “Finny” Fernley Finny has been excited quite recently to start a new journey! He has been cooped up in the house since he was a child in Gilneas. The only reason he was able to get out and see more than the city was when they had to flee due to the outbreak, etc. He now lives in Stormwind with his mother (he’s in his twenties). He’s quite the big dork, and has a penchant for extravagant traveling fantasies where he rescues those in need. Mostly due to the cheesy romance novels he reads. He’s planning on packing up and going out on his own. For adventure! 

The High Priestess: When has trusting their instincts paid off for your character?Answering for: Kayeshi LotusfangKayeshi isn’t very good at following her gut instinct. Well, I take that back. She follows her gut, but it’s usually wrong, and telling her to do stupid shit. However, when it is right, she usually goes headlong into the decision. One of the few and far between times this worked out for her, in a twisted way, was after she was evicted from her village. She was wandering Pandaria, stealing from who she could, and scamming from everyone else.She happened upon some Goblins. Even she had heard tales of the penchant Goblins have for gold. Her gut told her to rob them blind. She was starving, desperate, and a little off her rocker. So, she robbed them. But they caught her. They appreciated her tenacity and wiliness, so they offered her a deal. Work for them, or die. She decided she really liked living, so now she accepted the job. They sent her off to Kalimdor to work under their main base of operations.Though it was a really twisted way of working out, now she’s not starving, and makes money while still getting to steal, bribe, and scam!

The Chariot: What goal is your character determined to reach?Answering for: Mourai StormpawMourai desperately wants to become a Shaman of the Earth Ring. At the moment, she’s more of a Shaman of the ring of dirt. While she has a small affinity for the elements, she finds it difficult to focus, and motivate herself to practice every day. She’s very self conscious and lethargic. The two don’t mix well, so she ends up in a tizzy and wanting to do nothing. 

Strength: On what issue is your character persistent?Answering for: Anoki GrovestepAnoki is absolutely persistent that the Alliance and Horde can achieve peace, and coexist. He believes it in his heart. He needs to believe it. He wants the future generations to live in a world without war with those you can potentially live in harmony with. (If it’s, like, demons, or old gods, he knows you have to fight them).
