Hey, I saw your post about Sherlock calling a woman a whore and wanted to ask why that is a sexist comment, as he says "grasping, opportunistic, publicity-hungry tabloid whore", in /reply/ might I add, to her calling him a "back-stabbing, heartless, manipulative bastard". I just don't see the sexism at all here, could you maybe explain?

Yeah okay I’ve been getting a lot of messages like this so I’ll try and articulate my thoughts on the matter.

Yeah, it was a reply. Yeah, she insulted him first. But this is Sherlock. Do we honestly think he couldn’t think of anything better to insult someone with than “whore?” It rubbed me really wrong, especially since Series 3 seemed to be all about humanizing him, but he wouldn’t have called someone a gender-specific slur even when he was still being an equal-opportunity asshole to literally everyone. That is not the point of Sherlock. Sherlock does not see people in terms of how much sex they have or how they have sex or who they want to have sex with. (Did he ever call Irene Adler a whore? [that episode was also written by Moffat, but no, he did not.])

This is less a comment on Sherlock Holmes as a character. This is more a comment on how the second I heard that line, without having seen the title credits because I missed them on the stream, I was a hundred percent positive that Steven Moffat wrote the episode, because that’s exactly the kind of thing that he does. Slight twisting of characterization (or in the case of the Doctor disgusting massive warping) to make little jokes or delineating remarks at a woman’s expense. It’s perpetual and gross and really unnecessary.

I don't neccessarily agree with the thing about Sherlock being there to queerbait and whether if they do it, they do so to keep the queer audience "hopeful". Nontheless, isn't it good in this case to keep Sherlock a (probably) asexual character for the even smaller representation of people like him? Many people have never even heard of asexuality and find it sounds completely irrational, in which case making them a queer couple for representation would be hipocritical, wouldn't it?

That’s kind of the whole basis of queerbaiting - implying or giving hints that two characters may be queer in order to make people believe they are, but never follow through or loudly proclaim that they would never be queer. That’s what happens in Sherlock all the time. Mrs Hudson and other characters (along with the fans) think that John and Sherlock are a couple, but then the writers have John go ‘I’m not gay’ multiple times or Moffat and Gatiss even flat out dismiss the potential by going ‘they’re not interested in each other like that’. Even shows like Supernatural do it all the time with the ‘will they, won’t they’ deal, but never make plans to do anything with it.

There’s actually a number of characters that COULD be asexual, but, yes, since a lot of people haven’t heard of the term, they don’t realise they are. The problem is, Moffat explicitly states that he doesn’t think Holmes is asexual because that would be ~boring~. In all honesty, asexual people can be in a fulfilling romantic relationship without the sex, so you can still be a queer couple and in an asexual relationship at the same time.
