I should also mention it's preferable that you keep any rat cage in a room that that you can close any other animals out of. I'm not sure if it's common, but at least two of my rats learned how to open the cage and it was pretty vital to their safety that I was able to keep the door closed and the dog out while I was away in case they did decide to leave

Apparently I was wrong about the one thing I said. According to many websites, rats repel other rodents. It's their FOOD that attracts them. I probably just had a problem due to my poor habits concerning cleaning. Sorry for misinformation!

I've heard that pet rats tend to drive away wild rodents? I could be wrong though.

Rats are the smartest rodents, fancy mice are pretty great too but they're not as smart and cats love them for the wrong reasons. I personally hate guinea pigs/hamsters but to each they're own. Ferrets are GREAT! (But smelly). And that's my 2 cents!
Is now a good time to remind everyone that we're in college, I'm going for a PhD, we won't be in a position to get animals for about 5 years, and we don't even know what state it's going to be in?
(But otherwise, thanks muchly!)
