Quick lunch break session of Fire Shark on Antstream Arcade! 🍕🛩️
‘Fire Shark’ was one of the few games ported by Toaplan themselves to the Genesis, but also published in the US by Dreamworks, when they were trying out this whole game thing.
Box art comparison (JP/US/EU): Fire Shark.
Fire! 🔥 Shark! 🦈
DAY 873) Fire Shark - Sadness in Your Eyes
Composer: Masahiro Yuge
(0:00 - 0:01) 1 bar of 3/4
(0:01 - 0:10) 1 bar of 2/8, 3 bars of 13/8, 1 bar of 12/8
(0:10 - 0:36) 20 bars of 4/4
(0:36 - 0:45) 4 bars of 12/8
(0:45 - 0:50) 4 bars of 4/4
[loop from :01]
The 13/8 and 12/8 here are fairly off the beat in a way and since they’re as off the beat as they are it’s actually debatable where beat one is, and therefore debatable what timesigs surround the 13/8 itself.
I decided to write it how I did (with the one bar of 2/8 before the 13/8 starts as the pickup) because it makes it easier to understand how this loops AND makes the 12/8 conceptually work the same way the 13/8 does (ie the first two beats of that guitar part are the pickup to the downbeat, and not the actual downbeat).
I could’ve easily just written the 13/8 at the beginning to START where the 2/8 does and not thought of it as a pickup as well though. The “2/8″ is really part of that 3/4 bar arguably too, it’s all just syncopation, but the fact that this loops with the pickup AFTER the previous 4/4 bar rather than layered at the end of it makes it trickier to write out!
I hope that makes sense haha. I’m probably making this sound way more complex than it is lol, basically this is composed like Hard Rock Guitar Riffs style where odd time stuff feels more like a happy accident, which is a lot of why it feels as natural as it does, but also means it’s harder to transcribe!

Enjoying some Fire Shark on the retro gaming set up!
