The corner of the room was his safe spot now, the bare flesh of his back pressed firmly against the cold wall, tired eyes patrolling across the room from the front door of his apartment, to the window and the door to the bedroom. This spot, where he had been sat for hours, had the perfect view of every conceivable way into the room. No creature of the night was going to sneak up on him.
Maybe it was after effects of the magic Esme had used to heal the majority of his wounds, or just the process of healing in general, maybe it was the lack of sleep since he’s woken up form however many days he had been outcold, but he felt alert, more so than normal, hyper aware of everything that was going on in the room. Every creak of the floor board, every time things became a little too silent, every time something in the shadows moved. Nah, Demitri wasn’t going to get him that easily again.
This was the routine now. Cardelle’s new normal. Had been ever since he’d left the medical ward, his only interactions being with those who came to see him. Bram, Brina, Lucky, Daniel, and surprisingly Damien. Maybe not so surprisingly, he wasn’t sure, but the guy was their commander so it made some sense that he would continually check up on one of his own. It was usually now he turned up, so the knocking on Cardelle’s door shouldn’t have made him jump as much as it did. He was quick to open it and let the commander in. “Lock that once you’ve come in,” He didn’t say anything other than that as the other male entered, instead making his way back to the corner, standing, back pressed firmly against the wall again. “you don’t need to keep checking on me Damien. I appreciate it, honestly, but you don’t need to.”
