get 10.5 hours of sleep. play time with baby bunnies and maybe some kittens. my floofs are there to spend time with. i get to do harry potter trivia with my little sister at a quiet location. someone cooks dinner for me. go on a walk in the nice park in town in the evening with at least one of my floofs. watch one of my favorite shows while hanging out in the living room with my floofs and kattrick sits on my lap. i skip doing my physical therapy.

Any suggestions for accurate resources re. taking care of succulants?

this website is good, sometimes they get a little bit too advertisement-y, but I just ignore it and read the free stuff.  the attached facebook group is actually really good if you want to ask questions (depends on your tolerance for middle aged and old people using the word “succ” though lol)

you can also just ask me, this is a new special interest and i can probably answer most questions.

a couple tips: 

potting succs

use succulent or cactus soil!! trust me, regular potting soil retains way too much moisture!! making it easy to overwater (the biggest danger to succulents-- most of these tips will be about how to avoid that)

also don’t use miracle grow cactus/succulent soil, it’s bad

the gold standard is bonsai jack (but it’s pretty expensive and you should be fine with generic as long as it’s not miracle grow)

get a pot with a drainage hole!!

yes you can theoretically grow plants without one but they’re really easy to kill that way (by overwatering)

i know all the instagrammable containers are cute, but drill a hole first (diamond tip drill bits run at like 10 bucks and then you can make practically anything into a succulent pot)

if you’re worried about overwatering or really new to succulents, terracotta pots are the best (the soil dries out the fastest) (dollar tree/general sells little ones for $1 sometimes)

small pots are better

because more soil retains more moisture, smaller pots are really better they should have a little space to grow but don’t put one succulent in a huge pot

if you do have a big pot, shove a couple succulents in there, you can cram them in, they don’t need a whole lot of space

fill the soil up higher than you would usually, the majority of the plant should be above the rim of the pot (leave about a quarter inch/half inch between the soil and the rim)

pat the soil down lightly after you plant to make sure it’s at a good level

after you plant, don’t water!!!

i know most plants, you water right after planting but don’t for succulents, leave them a couple days before watering

reason: there could be wounds that haven’t calloused over and watering could lead to rot

don’t put them in a terrarium!!!!

terrariums encourage humidity which succulents hate (actually i have a lot of issues with all terrariums but that can be another post)

don’t put them with moss, they have almost opposite water needs

okay this might run counter to what you’ve heard but:

when you water, water a lot

succulents are desert plants and when it rains, it pours.

you want to imitate that, so when you water, you water a lot, the plants store water in their leaves and then they are ready for a drought (which is in this case, you not watering for a while)

this is one reason for the drainage hole, you can water, and then if it’s too much. it will come out of the hole

don’t mist your plants!!!!

it won’t give them the rain like downpour they need

the only time you should mist is babies

anyone who gives you a schedule to water your plants is lying to you

it depends on the plant, sunlight, your climate, time of year, etc, etc, etc

you’ll figure out a schedule as you go along, don’t worry

a couple rules of thumb

any string of whatever plants (hearts, pearls, bananas, raindrops) will need more water than most succulents

the thicker the leaves the less frequently it needs water (because all that thickness is water storage)

if you have a lithops or similar living stone (the ones that looks like rocks or alien brains or butts, depending on what kind of person you are), do your research!!!  you only water them a couple times a year (check out lithops.org)

don’t worry too much!! succulents are super forgiving (my sibling left a succ in the back of a car for six months, no water, barely any sunlight and it lived)

signs you need to water

if the leaves are wrinkling, go ahead and water

if you see aerial roots (roots growing out of the above soil part of the plant), it needs some more water

sunlight 

the amount of sunlight depends on the type of succulent 

for example echevarias like full sun, string of anythings prefer partial etc etc (you can look this stuff up if you know the type)

they are desert plants so most of them like a fair amount of sun

conveniently they’ll tell you if they need more sun

they’ll etoliate or stretch, which means they grow tall or grow facing the sun etc etc

if that happens they need more sun, so try moving them so they get more sun

more sunlight usually means brighter colors!

however, sunburn!!

succulents can get sunburn just like people

sunburn occurs when a succulent receives a lot more and a lot more powerful sunlight than it’s used to 

sometimes you’ll have to acclimate a plant to more sunlight (eg starting with two hours a day and then upping to four etc etc)

once they acclimate they should be fine

also!! when you water them (which you should always water plants in the morning if possible (it cuts down on root rot and pests)), try not to get drops of water on the leaves

on a particularly hot day, the drops of water can serve like a magnifying glass and lead to sunburn, so be careful

the vast majority of sunburn damage is cosmetic only, so don’t worry too much if it happens to your succs

are my succs in danger??

good rule of thumb: if there’s new growth you’re doing good

for most succulents that’s at the center of the plant (the rosette)

if it looks nice and healthy and over time is growing (little by little), don’t worry too much

the bottom leaves can and will die and it doesn’t mean anything too dire, they have to for the succulent to keep growing

if you see insects, yes!

google succulent pests to get advice on what’s dangerous and to deal with them 

usually applying watered down rubbing alcohol with a q-tip will work

not all insects are bad, if you see a fly or ants, they’re not going to damage your plants

are my succs a danger?

yes! some very common succulents are poisonous to dogs and cats including but not limited to:

jade

aloe

panda plant

snake plant

kalanchoe (aka mother of thousands)

don’t let your pets eat these!!!

Do you mean after the Fight for 15 campaign is successful or in a general sense?

if it’s successful (which is by no means guaranteed). It’s been about a century since the 8-hour day was won as the standard, and I think a 6-hour day movement is due relatively soon, looking at both technological advancements and how long it’s been. I think a 6-hour day movement could happen without a wage increase, but I think it would be a lot easier for the movement if it started with a wide wage increase being 1-3 decades past.

I also think 6 hours is what the result will be (rather than less) just because it is the next largest whole number that nicely divides 24 (easier to sell and propagandize), and it’s a much more conservative change than for example a 4-hour movement, and movements to shorten the working day have historically had fairly conservative gains (only a few hours and only an industry or two at a time)

I read it when I was young but I had some issues understanding it.  Half of the magic requires an understanding of Greek philosophy, from which the celestial spheres are based.  Also I had a lot of problems understanding conceptually how they could have a school of magic that forbids magic; now, given my greater understanding of universities, that makes complete sense.  In all seriousness, I’m too early in to say whether it’s a good book or not, but the trip down memory lane is really interesting.

What book are you talking about? I know the show...

I was aware it was based on a book series and it soon became apparent that that is what the author was referencing, considering that the show Bones takes place in DC and this character is referenced as living in Montreal.  The series is Thursday Next, it’s a sort of meta/satire/alternate universe series, and other book characters show up in the series, e.g. Hamlet.  One of the characters literally says in the book that Harry Potter can’t appear because of copyright issues, but then brennan appears a couple chapters later

Hall-mates playing loud or even slightly loud music but it's during the day so you can't really tell them to stop it. It's one thing/I'm more understanding if it's neighbors in like an apartment complex but at college it's awful.
