All of these deceased still have lingering attachments to ‘this side’ of the world; after their passing, they’re reluctant to enter the cycle of reincarnation[1], and instead choose to wander amongst the humans.

As such, they’re able to exist almost like a living human, even though they’re already dead. Their remaining brilliance could add a touch of warmth to the world, and the thoughts that have yet to be expressed could be conveyed to some extent—

Hm? Of course, that’s impossible ♪

The light from the fireflies and will-o’-the-wisps are the same – they lack warmth.

‘That world’ and ‘this world’ are isolated from each other, destined to be left without means of communication. Just like how my world is incompatible with yours.

The souls of the dead can only wander alone, forever unable to break through the invisible barriers.

Guess I should say he’s an idiot…? Heheh, it’s like I’m the only one who shouldn’t be saying that ♪

All in all, it’s supposed to be a very very very difficult task, something that’s simply impossible to achieve.

But still, he said something about wanting to drag me into that warmer world too.

So, I thought to start with things I’m already an expert in, and try to reach out.

It’ll be fine, ‘Producer’, there’s no need to worry. You’ve eaten them before, yes? The cakes that I’ve baked ♪

Their appearance may be a little shocking to you, but I’m confident as long as you try a bite ♪

You think so too? I’m relieved. Because ‘Producer’ has always been awfully close to Maa~kun.

You’ve been close to him the day you transferred to our school, you’ve been close to him during ‘DDD’, and you’re close to him even now.

Firefly’s Night - Things That Gradually Drift Away 3

Summary: After a day's work, Mao sends the transfer student home. En route, they meet up with Souma and Adonis who are on their way to go look at the fireflies. The transfer student manages to resolve the awkward tension between Mao and Souma in a timely manner, and brought up her interest in wanting to see the fireflies as well. Mao requests that Souma and Adonis take good care of the transfer student.

Mao: Really! It’s rare to see Ritsu so motivated. Rather than worrying… I’m actually very happy. He’s found something that interests him.

Mao: Sorry for making you wait till now, Anzu.

I’ll send you home now. Don’t worry, I’ll explain to auntie[1] on your behalf. We’re pretty lucky, the sky hasn’t turned too dark yet ♪

The term 阿姨 (translated as auntie here) is often used as a sign of familiarity in Mandarin. It is usually used for older, married female relatives. Most likely referring to Anzu's mom.

The original term used is 青梅竹马, an idiom which means ‘childhood sweethearts’ or ‘a couple who grew up as childhood friends’.

Most likely referring to the part in the Main Story when Eichi disbanded Trickstar, and allocated Mao to Akatsuki. However, I would like to clarify that I don't think Mao had the chance to perform as part of Akatsuki before reconvening as Trickstar, so this is probably a point of diversion (￣ω￣;).

Therefore I was surprised when Akehoshi mentioned that Japan still has a custom of watching insects… or rather, ‘watching fireflies’.

Souma: Ohhh, so that’s the reason why Adonis-dono had been dumbfounded.

Akehoshi-dono is right. The custom of ‘firefly appreciation’ is something that has existed since the ancient times.

It is said that people would wear bath robes and gather by the shore to watch the fireflies. In some places, festivals, singing and or dancing performances are also held.

Unfortunately, my understanding of ‘firefly appreciation’ events are limited to words.

My family is busy preparing for the festival every summer, so I never had the opportunity to attend.

I would also like to ‘watch the fireflies’ together with like-minded friends. Hasumi-dono and Kiryuu-dono from Akatsuki are very busy during this summer vacation, and I cannot trouble them out of my own willfulness.

Could it be that it’s some pitfall or trap, Adonis-dono…?

Adonis: Akehoshi is so lively that at times, I do not understand what he intends to say. Though, he did make it clear that the place he painted is the one with the most fireflies in this area.

Souma: Hmm, so that’s how it is. Even though Akehoshi-dono is a little unconventional, he’s not a bad guy who likes to tease his classmates, neither is he the kind of person to do meaningless things.

This is the only place on the picture that words are written; an arrow is drawn as well. This must be the place Akehoshi-dono wants us to go.

Assuming that is the premise… ah, that’s for sure. These rectangles… these rectangles are representative of Yumenosaki Academy. I think Akehoshi-dono used them to represent the school’s buildings.

Therefore, these three large triangles are the mountains near the school.

The place we need to go is one of the rivers on that mountain. As for the exact location… the hillside halfway up the west-facing mountain.

This is a map that has to be understood backwards. First, one must ascertain the location, then determine the route based on that. It is a map that only people who want to see the fireflies will be able to understand.

As expected of Akehoshi-dono! What an interesting, enigmatic idea ♪

Adonis: Kanzaki. Are ‘fireflies’ really such rare and precious things? Is it because they glow? Why did Akehoshi call them ‘treasures’?

Souma: Hm. I don’t think it is because they ‘glow’… they are common during the summertime, and there are many creatures that emit light too.

Our Marine Life Club’s Club President-dono also kept some glowing fish ♪

Speaking of which, the elders in my family have also spoken of a few firefly related legends. The performances that are conducted during ‘firefly appreciation’ all over Japan are usually related to these legends.

But those legends aren’t bad… it’s just that none of them have any relation to ‘treasures’.

There are some bug species which are more dangerous than a large animal. One must also take precautions against the diseases they spread, even if you won’t sustain the same kind of serious injuries if attacked by a large creature.

As afterwards, there is only increasing amounts of pain that would be hard to bear… One’s life might also be in danger.

Therefore, upon hearing Akehoshi mention Japan even has ‘Firefly Appreciation’, a… custom where you sit around appreciating insects, I was rather shocked.

Souma: Ohh, so that’s why Adonis-dono was so stunned back then.

My family would be busy preparing for the festivities every Summer, but I’ve never found a good time to participate.

I do wish to appreciate the fireflies with batchmates who share a similar interest. However, Hasumi-dono and Kiryuu-dono from our Akatsuki have been very busy during the Summer holidays; I cannot trouble them with my whims.

Not to mention, rather than ‘batchmates’, I feel like it’s more appropriate to use the term ‘seniors’ on those two…?

Speaking of which, I remember overhearing the seniors in my family talking about some legends related to the ‘fireflies’. Various ‘firefly appreciation’ performances across Japan also portray this.

I can’t say they’re bad legends per se, but… No matter how you twist it, they don’t really have any correlation to ‘treasures’ whatsoever.

Adonis: ……?

Souma: Adonis-dono, let’s just wait and see. Maybe later we’ll understand what Akehoshi-dono meant.
