yeoubi: ‘fox rain’; a sun shower – the event of having a light rain while the sun is still shinning.
A thin layer of sweat covers her forehead and neck, all the way down to her collarbones but the heavy air doesn’t seem to bother her – not yet, anyway, as long as the sun is all the way up and her companion presents little to no dislike towards the weather. Admittedly, it’s not the most pleasant of times to stroll through a city which seems to catch no break regardless of the hour but Hyolyn loves it and allows very few moments of summer to slip past her without having done anything. But she needs the walk – and maybe Sumin too because there are moments when the atmosphere between them edges on the desire to talk. Not a banal exchange of “how have you been”s and “let’s stop here and grab some coffee”– no. It feels a little more personal– the tentative attempt to dig just a little deeper beyond the surface.
They don’t and maybe, just maybe, Hyolyn is satisfied because there the silence is comfortable. It doesn’t weigh heavy on her shoulder nor does she feel like a fish out of the water with her mouth opening then closing again, making futile attempts to decide what conversation would be the better option. It’s fine as it is, she thinks, because perhaps all she really needs is a familiar face and the rare moment of silence without expectations. Or at least, it feels like it – it begins then. Out of the blue, suddenly.
It’s not one drop or two but proper rainfall albeit the sun shining so brightly she still has to squint behind her sunglasses occasionally. She lets out a gasp, out of surprise and her mouth hangs open for a moment as she turns to look at Sumin as if to check she, too, feels it. Of course she does– how silly of Hyolyn to think otherwise when the younger woman is just as shocked by the sudden pour of light rain over them. It’s refreshing and within moments, the waft of summer fills the air: the distinct smell of damp earth and from somewhere ahead, the sweet, sweet smell of candyfloss. A small shiver causes her shoulders to jerk quickly, evidently refreshed by the sudden rain but it’s the still shining sun which warms her up almost immediately after.
“What do we do?” are the first words with leave Sumin’s mouth when the surprise sinks in. She speaks a little louder because all around them, crowds are moving quickly to seek shelter– desperately.
“Continue walking, of course,” comes Hyolyn’s reply and she doesn’t give it a second thought. “A little rain won’t melt you, come on! Let’s find something sweet to eat,” she encourages and breaks into a small jog– Sumin would follow. She trusts the other would even if it might look a little odd to run into the rain rather than away from it.
But it’s pleasant. In the midst of the temporary chaos caused by rushing crowds, she finds peace.
