despite staring at their phone screen this entire time, buck has no idea how much time has passed since they stepped outside & planted theirself on the edge of the front porch. eddie & chris are distracted enough with buck's video game collection they're probably safe from being noticed missing for a while longer.

they needed the space, but the feeling of being alone is getting to be too much.

flipping their phone a few times, buck takes a moment to debate with theirself on how bad of an idea it is to text the one person they haven't heard from since bobb- since the accident.

i've been wanting to reach out.

he'd  never  get  used  to  the  way  los  angeles  wrapped  him  in  a  security  blanket  all  his  own.  how,  after  spending  months  away  from  its  warm  embrace,  it  still  welcomed  him  back.  how  the  118  invited  him  beyond  the  garage  doors  of  a  place  that  meant  more  than  he  could  articulate  ──  on  loan  didn't  mean   betrayal  no  matter  how  hard  or  how  much  he  tried  to  confuse  the  two.  it  was  as  if  he  didn't  miss  a  beat,  easily  falling  back  into  habits  +  rituals  he'd  unknowingly  carried  to  +  from  chicago,  finding  comfort  in  how  life  simply   ...   resumed.

it  was  how  he  ended  up  in  @firepiloted's  kitchen  on  a  boring  thursday  night.  life  resumed   +   so  did  they.  fingers  gently  twirl  the  neck  of  his  beer  before  placing  it  on  the  counter,  a  perfectly  timed  exhale  dropping  beneath  his  feet  as  he  shifted  his  shoulders  back.  "  yeah,  but  you  guys  didn't  have  too  much  fun  without  me.  "  statement  over  question  like  he  knew.  like  it  was  common  sense.  fun,  but  they  saved  the  best  for  when  he  returned.  they  had  to.  "  how  did  we  decide  i  was  cooking  tonight  ?  "  +  what  the  hell  was  he  supposed  to  do  with  the  nothing  left  for  him  in  the  fridge  ?

"When did you realize this?" Buck replies, feeling taken aback by Tommy's honesty. "I know it...it's not my fault; unless I scare you in some way," Buck continues, his voice soft and his tone sounding more depressed than anything. The break-up wasn't a brutal one but it did suck and Buck was still reeling from being told Tommy wouldn't be his last. "Wh-what if I wanted you to be my last?" He carries on questioning the older man. 

"You kind of let me hit the ground because I did fall." Buck states, narrowing his eyes as he looks at the pilot. "I can't be so sure you won't do this to me again." He concludes, looking away from Tommy and down at the ground beneath his feet. Tommy had no idea that Buck was falling in love with him but Buck had been when the rug was yanked from under him with their break up.

"  i  don't  think  it's  that  simple,  @firepiloted.  "  in  a  world  where  grey  was  not  only  a  shade  but  a  way  of  life,  it  was  never  that  simple.  they  danced  dangerously  close  to  the  razor  thin  line  of  existence  &  destruction  like  it  was  something  everyone  did.  sometimes  they  toed  it  just  right  &  other  times  ...  today  ...  it  didn't  really  matter  which  way  the  pendulum  swung,  someone  was  walking  away  changed.

weight  was  almost  overbearing  when  it  came  to  rest  upon  tommy's  shoulders.  he  could  almost  see  it  happen  in  real  time  ──   posture  that  came  to  slightly  slump  in  the  less  than  comfortable  bar  stool,  long  exhale  that  surprised  even  him,  the  way  his  face  sank  in  ways  that  made  it  difficult  for  buck  to  breathe.  he  recognized  it.  he  lived  it.  he  walked  himself  through  this  exact  hell  enough  times  to  know  what  it  felt  like  ...  how  easy  it  was  to  blame  oneself.  "  &  i  don't  think  there's  a  wrong  call  in  a  no  win  situation.  so  if  you  came  here  looking  for  someone  to  tell  you  you  messed  up  i'm  sorry.  "  hands  lower  to  comfortably  rest  in  his  pockets,  low  back  pressed  against  the  curvature  of  the  kitchen  sink  behind  him.  "  it  isn't  me.  "
