There's a flash of recognition in Tammy's eyes. "Sol," she says quietly, "what are you planning?"

"If I tell you, you cannot tell anyone. Not a soul. Not Cal's parents, not Auntie Anne, no one."

Cal's expression, already sober, becomes grave. Tammy's brow crinkles with worry, grey eyes wide. Solidarity's breath catches in her throat.

She needs to be able to trust them. She's pretty sure she can trust them. Cal despises violence, despises Lum's methods. And Tammy doesn't hate the planet like the Helios do, but she's afraid for herself, for Echinacea.

Solidarity gathers intelligence about the Quarters. Tammy gathers her courage. Cal asks a hard question.

"Flulu will support you," Cal chews his lip, "right? She's your Mom?" Mm. Not necessarily. "Mom will put Geoponics before me," Solidarity shrugs, "it's what I'd do in her place. So I need a good plan, or she'll tell me not to do it." Tammy frowns. "…I don't think Anne will back anything that has the chance of raising internal tensions in the colony," she gives Solidarity a worried look, "she's losing enough sleep over people fighting each other as it is. She says Cirrus keeps getting in fights and I think she'd be scared of reprisal if it doesn't work." Perversely, it's a relief to hear. "If I know in advance," Solidarity tells her, "that does make things easier for us. I understand where she's coming from, but being blunt, Cirrus will keep getting in fights while it's acceptable for the Garrison to bully anyone they don't like the look of."

I really liked writing this scene. Both Cal and Tammy have their own perspective here. I've seen misinterpret Anne's refusal to give her vote until you have a majority as cowardice, but IMO the person in charge of looking after the colony's most vulnerable would want a coup to either work or not happen. If Sol has the majority, she says something like...they're serious about this.

I feel like the Quarters characters kinda get done dirty so I really enjoy exploring their motives and interests and what they get out of the work they do. I *really* enjoyed Tammy outlining her practical concerns and clashing overtly with Cal's ideological ones in a way that gives him pause.

17 & 19 from the ask game for Solace, Solstice, and Solidarity?

17: Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?

This is a tricky one because I don't have a visual medium to work in. When I'm writing Sol from the outside, their eyes are pretty significant. Solstice is associated with mirrors, and reflections and self-image in general. Solstice holds a mirror up to other characters. It's not always a clear reflection, but it is one. The fact she wears her hair in three-strand plaits is also significant but in a silly way -- after all, a poly triad is the endgame for shame on me, baby.

Solace is associated with the earth, growth, death, and change -- their children are all named for growth and movement. There is a major motif I'm leaving out, because it might give the game away. Come back to me when they say there's good grief is finished lol.

Solidarity is associated with fire -- fire can be consumptive and destructive, it can be cleansing, it can keep you warm at night, it can scorch the earth and cook a meal and light up the night.

19. What is your general favourite thing about the character? What is your least favourite?

Solace is a slippery bastard. They're easy to write when I'm in their head, but hard when I'm not. It's loads of fun and super frustrating. They're *deeply* uncanny from the outside. They're a machivellian bastard. They're a beautiful idiot. They are either three layers deep into some fuckwild gambit or the inside of their head is just a dial tone. Their job is policy. They're kinda stupid. You see what I'm saying.

Solidarity is incredibly intelligent and incredibly neurotic, like one of those working dogs that if you don't give them a job will give themselves one. She has a conscience, otherwise she'd be straight up terrifying, but she's a little too hasty to do sketch shit and won't explain herself because the explanation is "I am tormented by visions." But people still WANT explanations you neurotic little lesbian and if you were a slightly better liar you could come up with some!!

I actually can't discuss my least favourite trait of Solstice's yet because it's a plot beat. ;) it's gonna come up pretty soon though! That composure's gonna break and break until that girl gets fucking known.
