The unspoken tenderness between Maan and Firoz
I’m sorry if you haven’t watched BBC/Netflix’s ‘A Suitable Boy’ based on Vikram Seth’s novel of the same name yet. Because then, you haven’t experienced the sheer tenderness between Maan Kapoor and Firoz Khan. Forget the bad dialogue and the exaggerated acting for a moment and focus on the relationship these two share. Every scene these two share, turns into a playful or a tender moment, always subtly hinting at its true nature. I won’t get into details for fear of giving spoilers but they both carry on with their affections towards women individually throughout. There is never any direct romantic or sexual contact between the two. In fact, one of them publicly declares the other his brother in order to save his life (oops, spoiler). Their stories, although built on the passion they project towards other people, dare the audience to ignore their bond, which clearly goes well beyond mere platonic friendship Indian audiences were pushed to believe. The absence of any real romantic plot between the two may be due to its large conservative Indian target audience or due to rules of acceptable conduct during the time period the show is set in. However, starting from flicking a flower petal off of the other’s shoulder, to being granted forgiveness for a truly great wrong, the show is filled to the brim with unspoken tenderness between Maan Kapoor and Firoz Khan. And I urge you, to watch the show, for your own pleasure and enjoyment.
