Treating Heat Stroke

move the person indoors or to a shady area

call 911 (or whatever your local emergency number is)

have the person lie down

elevate the person’s feat

if the person is conscious, given them cool water and have them sip it

remove their clothing

spray or drizzle cool water on the person

apply damp and/or cool towels or packs to the person’s armpits, wrists, groin, and ankles

if you have one, point a fan at the person

Safety With Electricity

-- current is dangerous, not voltage

-- DC currents seize up your muscles upon contact

-- do not touch someone on a DC current, as you will seize up too

-- AC will cause you to seize up and then release it and be freed from the current

-- most products say if the current is AC or DC

-- 1/10 of an amp directly across your heart will kill you

-- touching a charge of more than 1/10 of an amp may not kill you, as the skin is resistive and won’t carry much electrical charge

-- electrons flow easily in water, which is why mixing electronics and water is bad

Falls

Complications as a result of falls: -- hip fractions -- broken bones -- dehydration or hypothermia, depending on how long they have been on the ground -- bruising that could indicate bleeding under the skin -- excessive bleeding, if taking blood thinners

Steps: -- call 911 if the patient is injured, cannot move, or loses consciousness -- go to the hospital if the patient is on blood thinners, even if there is not any evident bleeding -- if the fall doesn’t require a trip to the ER, visit a regular doctor in the days that follow for an assessment

Triage Categories

Black Triage Tag -- Expectant -- victim is unlikely to survive given the severity of injuries, level of available care, or both -- palliative care and pain relief should be provided

Red Triage Tag -- Immediate -- victim can be helped by immediate care intervention and transport -- requires medical attention within minutes to survive (up to 60) -- includes compromises to the patient’s airway, breathing, or circulation

Yellow Triage Tag -- Delayed -- victim’s transport can be delayed -- includes serious and potentially life-threatening injuries, but status is not expected to deteriorate significantly over several hours

Green Triage Tag -- Minor -- victim with relatively minor injuries -- status is unlikely to deteriorate over the next several days -- may be able to assist in their own care -- the “walking wounded”

Heat Stroke

Symptoms -- a body temperature of 104 F or higher -- confusion -- agitation -- slurred speech -- irritability -- delirium -- seizure -- coma -- skin will feel hot and dry to the touch -- nausea -- vomiting -- flushed, red skin -- rapid, shallow breathing -- fast heart rate -- headache

What to do -- take immediate action to cool the person down -- get them into shade or indoors -- remove excess clothing -- cool person with whatever availible -- put them in a cool tub of water, spray with a hose, place icepacks on their head, neck, groin, and armpits, etc.
