Rationalization = using a reasonable excuse to avoid the real reason
Projection = placing the blame on someone else
Displacement = transferring feelings about one person to someone else
Compensation = substitution of one goal for another goal
Daydreaming = provides a means of escape
Repression = transfer of unacceptable ideas or feelings to the unconscious mind
Suppression = being aware of the unacceptable thoughts or feelings and refusing to deal with them
Regression = retreating to a previous developmental stage that provided more safety and security than the current stage
Denial = disbelief of something that is too shocking or frightening for a person to cope with
Withdrawal = cease to communicate or physically leaving
