My question is, what does the flag of the United States mean in this day? This country was founded on freedom which is what the majority of people would answer for my previous question. However, where is our freedom? The Founding Fathers created a document with flexibilty in hopes that it would cover all people. One of the main reasons that our ancestors moved to this counrty was in attempt to be free from the king and his religious tyranny. We all are guarenteed the freedom of religion, the first part of the first amendment. The majority of this country is christian and, although I realize christianity was not a new concept at that time, I do believe that the christianity we know today was molded to our people. We created, possibly unintentionally, a national religion. This is all good and well. I have no problem with that as long as my freedom to choose my own religion is not infringed upon. But here lies my dilemma. I feel that our freedom to choose is becoming less attainable especially with presidential candidates like Rick Perry. He recently created a PSA entitled “Strong” where he talked about how “you know there is something wrong with this country when gays can openly serve in the military but our children can’t pray or celebrate christmas at school.” Actually Mr. Perry, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Religion is all about self-fulfillment. Exactly that, self. It is intended for one to bask in on their own time and in the manner in which they choose. Keep it to yourself. Keep it at home where you can practice as you please without the chance of offending someone. And if your argument over someone being offended is that they just need to “find Jesus,” you are completely twisted. What you need to find is common courtesy. This isn’t a battle over religion (at least not in this post), it is a post about what is right for this country. What our country was founded upon.
