Flash Fic Friday: Weeds and Ruins
@flashfictionfridayofficial @jaimistoryteller @cawolters @inexorableblob @goblin-writer
The first big assignment after she became a mage wasn’t like Ember pictured it the last weeks. She hoped for an ambassador assignment. Or eliminating some threat caused by creatures like the nightshadows. Actually, she would have been fonder of dealing with these evil little creatures than stumbling through a thick deserted forest whose trees are so big they barely allow any light on the ground. She stopped counting how many times she slipped because of the moss some time ago. Larkin next to her seemed more happy about it. In fact, he hummed a happy tune since they entered the woods with her. “Are we there?”, Ember inquired with growing frustration. “An hour or less. But it will be worth it.” “How do you know?” “Because I read the information about this assignment. This is so exciting.” “Fill me in.” Ember pushed some low hanging branches aside. Everything was better than monotony. “We will see some of the oldest ruins of the continent. No one knows for sure how old it is.” She stopped dead in tracks. “We got sent here because of weeds and ruins?” “No, the weed is an annoying part of this. Let’s move.” With the most dramatic roll of his eyes Larkin pulled her along towards their destination. A few steps later she almost stumbled over a thick root because he pulled her along without mercy. “Hey, I can walk alone. If it is so important for you to see this collection of stones I will follow.” “Didn’t you always follow my lead? Since the first day”, Larkin teased her with a teeth-y smirk. “Idiot, you really wanna die here, don’t you?” “Don’t plan on dying early.” This time it was Ember who rolled her eyes. Sometimes his happy-go-lucky nature gave her the urge to strangle him, just a little bit. For a second or two. As promised they reached the ruins in less than an hour and it was as overwhelming as expected. Exactly as overwhelming as the head mage's collection of fountain pens. “Oh, ruins… who would have guessed?” “Don’t ruin it. Just come. There is a column with some inscriptions, we shall copy.” Eager to finish their assignment Larkin hurried over to the mentioned column without waiting for Ember. She followed him slowly and examined her surroundings closely. Something felt off with it. Absent-minded she rubbed her arms. “Hey Larkin, could it be this place is a source?” “Yeah, I think so”, he nodded while he searched his writing tools, “I also feel this weird vibes. If you consider the fact that this is one of the oldest ruins it makes sense it became a source. Some scholars believe some great war took place at this site and the energy of all those lives that ended too soon turned these ruins into something even time can’t defeat completely.” With a disgusted face she made her way around the column. “We seek you oh heavenly to guide our hands in this battle. We seek you oh bloody to slain our enemies. We seek you oh innocent to protect our children. Hail to the Queen of History. Hail to the Golden One”, she read out loud with her head slightly tilted. Larkin nudged her. As she looked over to him his face was unreadable. “You didn’t tell me you learned the old language.” “The what? I never took language classes. Not my best trait.” “But you could read this.” The way he said that as he pointed at the column confused her. “Why shouldn’t I be able to read this?” “Because it’s the old language, stupid”, he laughed. Snickering he began to copy the text but Ember couldn’t care less. Instead, she wandered around to keep going. “Maybe the whispering fire gave me this knowledge? I mean it changed my eye and hair color. Who knows what else it did.” “A logical assumption. The fire is as old as time. It makes sense it knows every language. And could you stop walking around?” “I am sorry I am more interested in killing some creatures than this column. My sword hand is itching.” “It always itches, Ember. Now sit down and be silent. The less you annoy me the faster I am which means the faster we are back and can get the next assignment.” Ember stuck her tongue out. She didn’t care that it made her look like a reproachful toddler. “You sound like Mirabell.” “She has a point when it comes to you. Even squirrels rest more than you.” With a huff, she picked a spot under a tree and decided to sleep until he was finished. Who knows what the head mage thought about sending them both. Maybe he wanted to get rid of Larkin? The thought amused her enough to ignore the weird vibes and doze off to sleep.
Assignment 1 : “Hello, my question is...”
Process and Review
At first, I wrote down my question of ‘design.’
What do I want to ask something about design?
I came up with elements and the process of design.
For me, the design should be aesthetic, unique and surprising to the viewers.
How do we design something? Things we’ve designed are always based on our experiences, both consciously and subconsciously. Also, It can be done by progressive processes.
But I wanted to explore more about design itself. How can I attract people by my design? Every day, new objects appear and disappear. If I make something, I want to make it fun. Also, I hope the things that I will design to give some pleasure to the viewers. Then, people would love to buy the
So I chose this question. “How can we make design fun?”
I wanted to play with some different materials to represent this phrase.
I just went around the Woolworth to find the materials. I thought a snack must be a pleasure to all. So, I bought some popcorn and m&m chocolate. I thought the shape of pop-corn and colour of m&m chocolate would be fun to craft the question. But, It was too simple to articulate this question. I wanted to create a question with deeper meanings in the material itself. On my way home from uni, I found the one balloon stuck in the fence on the Bowen street. It was not expected scene in the most unlikely place, made me smile.
Also, a balloon is a material that can be transformed easily. It is an unlimited and colourful material. It always gives pleasure.
When I made this question in the room, I felt it was not enough to deliver the playful mood of the material. (Also, Shayna told it seemed like depressed and dull ) So I went out to make this question in the same place I saw the ballon on the fence!
With using different colours, I wanted to make this question more funny and lively. Also, I tried to form a relationship between the fence and the balloons.
But I think, I would like it more if I made an experimental typeface with a balloon.
As Shayna said, the final image looked less digitally. I couldn’t get the exact point of the feedback, so I wrote a comment again… I guess Shayna must be busy and couldn’t read my comment. But I believe if I take this picture more sophisticatedly and edit it more vibrant and sharp, It maybe looks more elaborate.
Today was my first peek at my new hospital for the next 13 weeks!
They do things pretty differently from what I’m accustomed to. For example... they operate on young kids pretty often. Like, I saw several cribs. I don’t even know how to work a crib! How do you position a baby?!
Everyone has been really nice so far, and it’s so weird not having to wear my own scrubs! They hire a lot of travelers, which is either a good or bad thing... they said they lost a lot of staff due to political reasons? I’m not sure.
Either way, I’m hoping to absorb as much as I can this week and go in with a confident, ready to learn attitude. This can only make me a better nurse, right?
How many runners does the Tower have?
One of the first dialogue options in the game is with Salma Togan where she explains why Crane is being referred to as ‘31,’ but after the dialogue has ended and you begin to walk away from her, she adds an extra “Thirty-one infected and only seven runners left...”
This means, after Amir’s death at the beginning of the game, the Tower has seven runners. And we know Amir was a runner because during the same dialogue, Salma mentions “one more runner gone,” very strongly implying Amir - the only person we’ve seen die so far - was the runner that was lost.
During the second story mission, First Assignment, Crane sets up traps for Brecken and his team to utilize during a night run. That team consisted of Brecken and three other runners and the run was the one seen in the Run Boy Run cinematic trailer. All three of these other runners die.
This leaves the Tower with four runners before the addition of Crane:
1. Brecken 2. Jade 3. Timur - who we know is a runner due to the fact that the subtitles refer to him as ‘Runner’ in the cutscene in between Airdrop and Pact with Rais.
There are a few options for the fourth runner:
4. Rahim - I usually put Rahim in this slot because I fully believe he’s a runner, but let’s say he’s not one or isn’t listed as one because he’s stuck manning the radios and helping Alfie with things around the Tower.
Or 4. Ayo - Ayo is another option for this position. He oversees the runners, scouts, and guards of the Tower and works somewhat as a dispatch for them. He can be found on a radio giving orders during the mission Prodigal Son when Crane goes to ask him about Kristov’s whereabouts. Ayo also is present during the same cutscene between Airdrop and Pact with Rais with Timur, implying his importance during making decisions concerning runners.
EDIT 01/07/19: @insanedestiny09 kindly pointed out that Volcan is the fourth runner. He can be found in one of the safe zones outside the Tower as one of the agility challeges, and when Crane speaks him he says:
“It drives me nuts that people consider you the best runner in the Tower. It’s always been me! Volcan!”
Obviously making him one of the Tower’s runners.
Conclusion?
During most of Dying Light, after the addition of Crane, the Tower has a whopping grand total of five runners.
(Kristov was the sixth runner, but he only ran one mission before giving it up to make weapons with his father, Alexei, at the Tower after Prodigal Son.)
Only way to keep my sanity
