Guess Who’s Back, Back Again

Oi,

I’m back training capoeira after having the world’s longest summer holiday. I’ve been back training for just over a month now and I think I have gotten back into the swing of things.

 It was strange coming back to the group at first because there are so many newbies in our group!! I’m not the lowest ability in class anymore! That was a strange concept for me to deal with. I still can’t do a ‘perfect’ meia lua de frente yet I am teaching others to do it. On the plus side I get to revise lots of basics again which is always useful even if it does feel a bit repetitive at times.

During the summer I didn’t do much capoeira at all apart from the Castelo de Capoeira event which was AWESOME! Basically I stayed at a castle in Northumbria all weekend and did capoeira- What more could you want from life? I love events. It is amazing how much you can learn from just interacting with Mestres and Capoeiristas that you don’t usually get to speak to. Also I bought an adult sized berimbau which I have been playing lots of!! I love berimbaus so much <3

In less than two weeks now, we have our next event coming up. It will be my second batizado which means I will be getting my second belt. ARGHHH. I don’t feel ready for it at all but apparently no one ever does :/ My teacher said I need to get my next belt because every time I sit and play an instrument I am showing the higher belts up. Apparently my knowledge of Capoeira philosophy etc. is above what is expected for a first belt also. I just worry that my actual physical capoeira abilities aren’t on par with those of a second belt. Still I am excited for the batizado and all the partying :D

Anyway I’m sure everything will be fine. My teacher wouldn’t let me get second belt if he didn’t think I was ready so he must see something in me which I don’t. I will keep you updated.

Just a quick update

I have come home for the summer to live in York with my parents. I would have loved to stay in Liverpool and been able to have done lots of capoeira over summer but unfortunately money issues meant I couldn't :( In the mean time I have been focusing on learning Portuguese. Also I now have an adult sized berimbau (!!!) so I have been able to learn some new songs and practice singing them. I move back to Liverpool on the 6th September so more blog entries will come then!

This is what one of the higher belts said to me last night. I have my exams coming up this week and she was telling me to focus on them. It is hard for me because I love Capoeira so much and it is so easy to let myself get distracted with it.

The exams are stressing me out. I have no motivation to revise. I am now starting to despise Forensic Anthropology. I used to like it, that's why I am doing the degree. Now I feel more lost than ever about my future. I'm single, unemployed and I feel like I'm about to fail my exams. D:

Oh well, at least there are no exams in Capoeira.

Do you ever get that feeling when you look at someone and shivers run down you? Your heart flutters, you have butterflies in your stomach, a smile runs across your face. You notice your arms, you have goose bumps, your hairs are standing on end. You realise you are in love. Your whole body is filled with joy and elation. Nothing shall break this bond.

This is how I feel when I think about my capoeira family in Liverpool. I have missed them so much (even though I was only gone 11 days). I am in love with my friends. My family.

Outgrown

I have just been home to York for 11 days over Easter. It is strange being back home. As soon as I arrived I felt like I was a giant inside my house. I remember as a child having to stand on a stool to reach the sink and now I tower over it. My friends from York haven’t changed one bit. Although this sounds good, it was a bit of a problem for me. They are still stuck in their childish ways, all ways talking about their love lives and flirting with boys just to get free drinks. I feel like there are much more important things in life to be worrying about and I definitely feel more than capable of buying my own drinks.

Whilst I was in York I did train with the Capoeira group there. We did a class on bencãos and it was very different to what I’m used to in Liverpool. The class didn’t make me sweat as much as I usually would but it made me wheeze really badly. It was a good class but it did make me miss my little capoeira family in Liverpool. I guess everyone has their own style of teaching and their own ideas on how they want their classes to be run.

This week in York has made me realise that I want to stay in Liverpool forever- well, definitely over summer at least. This means I need a job (If anyone wants to hire me or knows of any jobs in Liverpool, message me ;) ) so I can get a place with my capoeira teacher for a few months. The thought of needing to find a job is quite stressful. I have my exams coming up very soon (my last one is on the 9th May) and between last minute- much needed- revision and capoeira, I’m worried I will have little time to look for, and successfully find a job I can start on the 2nd June.

I know this feeling of worry and stress will all be over soon when I have completed the exams and found a job. I am trying to picture the little capoeira flat on the horizon. If I have to spend a summer away from all my friends in Liverpool- well that’s not worth thinking about. I need to be around like minded people that I enjoy the company of. Also getting a job would mean I can have so much more of my own independence. Having extra money would mean I could go to more capoeira events and even think about traveling, driving lessons, saving for my future. I just hope I’m successfully in my search.
