Maker Monday - Baby's First Cell

Wow! It was a busy couple of weeks for me, and it might be another busy week this week, but I am hoping to at least knock out a couple of posts this week, starting with this fun one!

We recently held an office baby shower for a co-worker of mine, and I knew I was going to do something hand made for her baby - then I found out she was having twins!!  Needless to say it took me a little longer to put together her gift now that I needed to make two.  She is a lab tech involved in cell culture work, so I wanted to make something a little fun for her babies.

Here are the basic instructions for the "baby's first cells" that I made for her.  I started with a base idea found here  only I made it a little bigger, added more ribbons and changed the back.

I started out by selecting my basic colour scheme.  I used 100% wool felt (you really can't beat it - it is amazing to work with).

I cut out most of the pieces (I created my own templates for the cell organelles using paper)  Clearly, if you don't want to make a cell, you can do anything you like for the back.

I hand stitched on all the pieces using a backstitch and matching coloured thread.  I then added details using other thread or embroidery floss (depending on how thick I wanted the details).

I cut out some strips of felt and pieces of ribbon (around 14 cm long and an 2.5 cm wide).  For the felt strips I used my pinking shears to give them a fun edge and added texture for the babies.  The ribbons are another level of texture and so I chose some that were smooth and shiny and others with a different texture.  I also used as many colours as I could because I wanted the babies to get lots of stimulation from these.

I hand stitched all around the outer edge of the backs attaching the ribbons as I went (again I used a backstitch).

To add even more sensory input (I'm a nerd) I wanted to add some crinkly noise to one side of the toy.  I did some reading and it was suggested to use cereal bags to get that effect, they can be washed without dissolving (they can't go in the dryer so I gave hang to dry instructions - which are needed for some of the ribbon anyway).

I washed a good crinkly cereal bag (they are not created equal, look for a good one) and cut out two circles per toy.  I attached the two circles together using a small two sided sticky square to make it easier for sewing.  I tacked the plastic in place in 4 spots around the edge to hold it secure - it will get sewed in all the way around when I close up the toy.

For the front of the toy I basically followed the instructions in the link I provided above, but making sure all the pieces were sewn on using a backstitch all the way around to be sure they would not come off - I didn't want the babies swallowing pieces.

The final steps are sewing the toy together and adding the stuffing.  Using embroidery floss in a matching colour I sewed the front and back pieces together.  I used a running stitch, because the backstitch in this case would be too bulky and look messy.

When I was most of the way around I added the stuffing - I used poly fill.

When stuffed to my liking I finished it off by sewing the last part closed and tying off inside one of the felt loops (this hides the knot quite well - especially if you knot off in the loop that matches your thread colour.

Here are the finished results.  Mostly matching other than the base colour, complete with some pet friendly ribbon (as these babies will share their home with a beloved family dog).

As you can see the backs look less plump than the fronts.  This is because of the crinkly fabric (I didn't stuff between the fabric and the felt for optimum crinkly sounds)
