Thinking about it, I actually kind of do miss martial arts. I've been inactive for about two years now, and I feel like I'm stretching the truth when I tell people I'm a martial artist. But the truth is, once you're a martial artist you never really lose the values you were taught and I've been in it since I was four years old. That's give or take fifteen years.
I almost want to get back into it, too. If not for refreshing my self defense skills, but for the workout you get going to three classes in a row on a Saturday morning because, as a black belt, you have to help teach the beginning and intermediate classes besides going to your own.
But honestly, the reason I don't want to go back, besides burnout, is because (besides the instructors) I really didn't like anyone in the classes. I know that sounds terrible for me to say that I thought the majority of them were freaking weird (because look at me), but the last time I ever had a good friend in martial arts was back at a previous location and the girl quit before getting to black belt with my dad and I.
So right now I hold a first don [first degree black belt] in two different systems, and it's basically going to waste. It's not like I want to get into a fight or something, and you always hope you never have to use what you know, but all the stuff I've learned is slowly going to pot. That's one of the reasons I've been trying to stay active and flexible like I used to be. They nicknamed me Roadkill back in the day because I could lay flat in the spits! I need to never lose that....
