My very first CPU vs my current CPU
I BOUGHT MY FIRST EVER LAPTOP HECK A DOODLY YEAH!!! TIME FOR MORE MMO'S, MORE WASTING HOURS AND HOURS ON TUMBLR, AND TAKING SCREENSHOTS OF TAEVAS!! FINALLY!!!
Hey, just to clarify, the computer Timmy has is mine. The one I’m writing this on right now, actually. It's sitting on my lap, loud as hell, already running warm like it’s been working overtime. The charger port is messed up, but hey, it works. Also, yes, the Discord name on it is different, but we all have our embarrassing usernames from back then, right? I’m not ashamed, okay? Anyway, just wanted to share this because it’s been forever since I’ve used it and it’s still alive somehow. Anyway, enjoy Timmy’s adventures with it… or whatever.
Headcanon: Tim Finds His First Computer
Tim had been poking around the Batcave, trying to track down a few old case files from his earlier days in Gotham. The files were dusty, and Bruce was still adjusting the security systems after the last round of “tech upgrades” (read: Tim upgrading everything he could find to make it work better). As Tim rummaged through the old cabinets, something caught his eye—an old laptop tucked away in the back. It was covered in stickers, the kind you might put on a notebook in middle school to give it some character. Tim froze. That couldn’t be...
He carefully pulled it out, and the second he touched it, the familiar heat radiated from it. Oh. This one. He set it on the table, half laughing to himself.
It was his first computer, the one he had before becoming a full-time vigilante, back when he thought finding information meant writing code and hacking into systems on a less-than-legal laptop. Gotham’s favorite, Tim Drake, at your service...with this ancient relic.
It had cracks on the corners, a few stickers peeling off, and a particularly odd one that said “Property of the Young Detective” in crumbling font. It looked like it had been through hell and back, but there was something nostalgic about it. The computer ran incredibly hot, as if it was still trying to process the entirety of the internet from 2008. Tim blew off the dust, realizing it was a fossil.
He clicked the power button—half expecting the thing to short-circuit and catch fire on him—but to his surprise, it powered on, a bit slowly at first, like it had a hangover from years of not being used. He sighed with a small sense of victory.
The real fun began when he tried to connect it to the internet. Oh, yes, of course, the good old days of only having access when the LAN-cable was plugged in. The whirring sound of the computer trying to find the internet was loud enough to wake the dead, and if he’d forgotten to place the cable just right, it would disconnect at random intervals. The creak of the old metal body as he tried to open it fully made him wince. You had to pull the charger hole up at the right angle to even get the damn thing to stay on. And it didn’t last long either—less than an hour if you didn’t have it plugged in. The battery was just a mystery of its own.
“Ah, the good old days,” Tim muttered under his breath, tapping the keyboard with an awkwardness that felt oddly endearing. He hadn’t used a machine like this in years. The screen popped up with its cracked, low-resolution glory—no surprise there, but it was still his. The brightness barely worked, and the keyboard had the classic ‘sticky’ feeling from spilled coffee and other teenage misadventures.
Then he noticed a piece of scrap paper wedged in the corner of the laptop, sticking out of the keyboard area like it had just fallen in years ago. Tim pulled it out, immediately recognizing the handwriting—it was his own. Scribbled in messy pen was a Discord name and password from long ago, the one he used when he was in high school chatting with his friends in the early days of the internet. He chuckled, remembering his embarrassing early attempts at socializing online before his life turned into this. The account had been dead for years, and the name... "DetectiveTimmy69"... oh, god. “Really, Tim? That was the best you could come up with?” He cringed, feeling a flush on his face. He had clearly been way too proud of that username back in the day.
Tim pressed the keys on the broken laptop and logged into the old Discord account, just to see what would happen. The message history was long gone, and the account was marked as inactive—but still, it felt like some strange relic of his teenage years. He couldn’t help but smile at the thought that he’d been one of those people who actually still tried to make everything work back then, even if the technology was crumbling.
His fingers hovered over the keyboard for a moment as he wondered what his old self would think of him now, sitting in the Batcave, using cutting-edge tech to fight crime, yet still secretly clinging to the ancient relic that was now his first laptop. With a sigh, he put the scrap of paper back where it came from, and decided that, just for old time's sake, he would leave the laptop plugged in for a few more hours. Maybe he’d even let it charge all the way this time.
“Some things never change,” Tim said aloud with a chuckle, reaching for a piece of cold pizza, ready to tackle whatever Gotham threw at him next. But before he closed the laptop, he noticed the paper heart on the screen, and for a moment, it was like the clock had turned back, and he was just Tim Drake, the kid who thought hacking the world’s darkest corners could be a game. Maybe, just maybe, there was still some charm in the chaos of it all.
