Who I am, why I became a travel agent, and why Cruise Control.
Hello!
My name is Ma Blushwood. I am a travel agent–an advisor before, during, and after the trip; the one that does all the work for you. I love what I do, and I want to tell you all why I love it, and how I came to fulfill this wonderful role.
I did not travel much in my adolescence, and it’s not for want of travel. I had been to Florida on a road trip with my aunt’s family, I had gone on two school trips to Europe, and I took a cruise with my grandmother and brother. All of these experiences were radically different, and I learned a lot from each of them. What I learned the most was, I did not get the most out of this experience. I always enjoyed where I was at and what I was doing while travelling, but I was unaware of what else there was to do and see, or how to do something in particular, during every single trip. It occurred to me that I did not know how to travel.
Over time, I longed for adventure, and I considered travel agency initially for the ability to travel. I attended Penn Foster and received a career diploma and travel and tourism… in January of 2020. For a while, I put my travel agent dream on hold–let’s be honest, we all put a lot on hold–but I had years to think about it, knowing that I can fall back on that specialization.
The more I thought of what I wanted to provide as a travel agent, I thought about my experience with travel planners. Overall, they weren’t great. My aunt was not the best tour guide, my teacher was always overwhelmed with kids, and my travel agent did less than the bare minimum when preparing our cruise with us. I was so unaware of what was available on the ship, it was not until the last three hours at sea that I learned how to even get to the deck! I had no idea that the deck was even an option! I spent my time in my cabin, at the gym, and window shopping in a single souvenir shop. I spent my trips in Europe dragging my feet behind hoards of other school groups, confined to experiencing only what was deemed educational and age appropriate, though not always authentic. I went to Florida confused and excited, and left sunburnt, swollen by a jellyfish sting, stressed out from my aunt and uncle’s fighting.
I wanted more. I wanted more for myself when I travelled, and I wanted to teach others how to get more from their travel. That is why I created this blog.
Why Cruise Control? Why specialize in cruises and rail travel? It’s because I hate flying, to be honest, and because I love the effortless peace that comes with being on the ocean, and the feeling of adventure on an intimate river cruise, and the fact that coach on a train is so much larger than coach on a plane!
I want to help others travel as informed, as safely, and as confidently as possible. I want to help them save money on the big things so that they can spend more on the little things. I want to help others create memories that are unforgettable by design, and I want to share my love of the world and its life with others. Now, I work as an agent with Gateway Travel, and I have the opportunity to do just that!
Thank you for being here. My hope is that this blog provides wonderful, friendly, confidence-building advice, insights, and stories. I hope that it inspires you to go.
Your trusted travel advisor,
Ma Blushwood
