Part 1, Part2, Part 3
Training sessions took on a new, surreal dimension. During a particularly intense drill, as Sae executed a flawless, devastating pass that left Isagi in the dust, a high-pitched cheer echoed from the sidelines.
“WOO! THAT’S MY GRUMPY-CAKE! KICK IT WITH ANGER, BABY!”
Sae didn’t flinch. He didn’t even blush. He just gave a barely perceptible nod in her direction, a king acknowledging his jester, before stealing the ball back from a stunned Rin.
Rin, for his part, was having a silent crisis. His entire worldview, which was built upon the foundation of his brother’s impenetrable, superior coldness, was fracturing. “He lets her… touch him,” Rin muttered to Shidou during a water break, his voice haunted.
Shidou, who found the whole situation hilarious, grinned. “Yeah, and she’s all over him! It’s like watching a kitten climb Mount Everest. You keep expecting him to swat her off, but he just… adjusts his footing.”
The true test came during a practice match. She was perched on the bleachers, her pink frog bag beside her, meticulously drawing what appeared to be a very detailed mustache on a picture of Napoleon in a history book.
Sae was a force of nature on the field, a symphony of precise, ruthless plays. But then she stood up, cupped her hands around her mouth, and yelled, “SAE! I HAVE TO PEE! DON’T SCORE UNTIL I GET BACK!”
The entire field stuttered to a halt. Bachira wheezed, collapsing onto the grass. Reo’s mouth hung open. Nagi, who had been half-asleep, actually blinked awake.
Sae stopped dribbling. He turned, looked directly at her, and uttered a single, flat word. “Hurry.”
She saluted and scampered off. Play resumed. Sixty seconds later, she came sprinting back, skidding to her seat. “OKAY, I’M BACK! YOU CAN SCORE NOW!”
And as if given a direct command, Sae effortlessly stole the ball, weaved through three defenders, and slammed it into the net with a terrifying finality. He then turned his head, not to look at his defeated opponents, but to look at her.
She was on her feet, jumping up and down, blowing a party horn she’d produced from somewhere. “TOLD YOU HE WOULD!” she shouted to a bewildered Chigiri.
Later that evening, Bachira found her in the common area, carefully gluing googly eyes onto all the remotes. “So what’s the secret?” he asked, plopping down next to her. “How did you tame the ice king?”
She looked up, her expression unusually serious for a moment. “I didn’t tame him.” She dabbed a bit more glue. “You don’t tame a thunderstorm. You don’t put a leash on a volcano.” She placed a googly eye squarely on the power button. “You just learn to dance in the rain and appreciate the pretty lava.”
She grinned, her momentary seriousness vanishing. “Also, I’m the only one who laughs at his jokes. They’re really, really bad. Like, ‘what do you call a fake noodle?’ kind of bad.”
Bachira leaned in. “What do you call a fake noodle?”
“An impasta!” she chirped. “He told me that with a completely straight face. I laughed for ten minutes. I think that’s when he decided to keep me.”
From across the room, Sae was watching them, a faint, almost invisible smirk on his lips as he listened. He saw her demonstrate the impasta joke to Bachira, who now also appeared to be laughing uncontrollably.
Isagi walked over to Sae, following his gaze. “She’s… something else,” Isagi said, for lack of a better term.
Sae’s smirk didn’t fade. His eyes were soft, an expression no one at Blue Lock had ever seen directed at another human being. “She’s mine,” he said, the words simple and possessing a gravity that his insults and boasts never could.
It was then that they all understood. She wasn’t cracking a code. She wasn’t taming a beast. She had simply walked into his dark, silent castle, started throwing a glittery, noisy party, and he had looked around at the mess and decided he preferred it to the emptiness. And the world hadn’t ended. In fact, for Itoshi Sae, it had only just begun.
