how did amphibax lose his hand?
The seas of the Matoran universe were uncharted and unknown for most of history. Only Ehlek’s ancient kingdom had any knowledge of the bottom of the sea, and those records were lost to the surface when his people retreated below Zakaz. In the end, we only have Amphibax’s word to explain.
He claims that he scoured the depths of every ocean for his lost master, even the vicious South Seas around those savage islands. The tales he tells of vast, primordial Rahi, however, are hard to believe. Sea serpents 65 feet long, intelligent jellyfish, rays capable of flying above the water... the fancies of a Ga-Matoran’s overactive imagination.
Worse yet, Amphibax has blamed different creatures for his injury in different tellings. Once, he claimed it was a massive shark, larger than a Razor Whale. Another time, a fistfight with an enormous, aggressive shrimp. I, personally, like best the creature that mimicked seaweed with its tentacles, only to draw prey into the knife-like teeth at its center. However, I doubt Amphibax would ever admit he lost his protosteel talons to an overgrown anemone.
In the end, the best comfort is knowing that his stories are wildly exaggerated. Surely, no serpent could ever be longer than Po-Metru... if such a thing existed, we would have known, and would have dealt with it. What are Toa for, if not dying in droves for the sake of wildlife control?
