A Moment

I didn't see it coming.  She kept telling me she needed to tell me something, but I thought she was going to say something silly as she regularly does.  I played with her hair and asked her what was up, to tell me. She just kept laughing and repeating, "I can't. I'm nervous or scared. I don't know. Push my hair behind my ear like you always do."  I tried not to worry when the minutes went by and she wouldn't tell me. I made little faces at her but it clearly wasn't helping because she just kept laughing and covering her face.  I covered mine, and did "peek a boo" and she just exhaled it in what seemed like a quick breath, "I love you."  I quickly closed my hands on my face, and that was it. A whirlwind of emotion rushed up to my head and I felt my heart squeeze for a few seconds, and for a moment I lost my breath. There was a sudden wave of warmth rushing up my spine, and I was silent as I put my arm around her waist and waited for those eyelashes to flutter as she opened her eyes. But she didn't open them for a few desperate moments. 

I haven't felt this in years, and it was right then and it was exactly right now.  She finally opened them.  "I love you," I said.
