A BIG THANK YOU 👏 ...to the 1,200+ people who made their way through the crowds (and, at some points in the night, the puddles) to visit our Art NOW! exhibition at this year's First Light Festival! And an even bigger thank you if you left clutching one of our members' works 🙂 Plus a special mention and commendation for members @zawadzki_gallery Paul Zawadzki and @sculptureart2021 Ally Marriner, who spent the early hours manning the fort – or, in this case – keeping out the rain with their fingers in various holes in the dyke, during some of the biggest storms Suffolk's seen in a long time! The good news is that, if you didn't manage to make it to the show, we'll be posting many of the images here over the next few days. Sticking with the ceramic theme, this is "Landscape 1" (black clay, slips, underglaze colours) by @easterlyartists member @vivienne_burns Vivienne Burns. It's just one of the pieces she'll have on show - together with work from 14 other artists - in our new exhibition "Art NOW!", which opens midday TODAY Saturday 18 June in Kensington Gardens, Lowestoft NR33 0HY as part of this year's 24-hour @firstlightlowestoft First Light Festival. Vivienne works in black clay painted with slips and underglazes. This colour provides a background for sgraffitto drawings, which are made through the coloured surface. Other backgrounds and patterns are sometimes applied through stencilling and printing onto the surface. The sculptural form of the work provides four facets, which are angled and curved to allow the design to flow round the form. The surface drawings are all based on the landscape, as viewed both from close up and at a distance. New ceramic from @easterlyartists member @fionashreeve Fiona Shreeve: this is "Brutalist Façade - Large D Shape, Yellow" Fiona’s work uses architectural imagery from the 20th Century Modernist Movement. Brutalist architecture and mass housing provide the images from which she creates her geometric and architectural sculptural forms. She frequently raids the 18th Century and has a has developed a unique way of under-glaze transfer printing onto her hand-built ceramics, influenced by Josiah Spode's original method but with a modern twist. Another in his series of collages of lighthouses around the Suffolk coast, this is "Lowestoft Light" by @easterlyartists member @billhawardart Bill Haward. Bill is a retired architect from an Ipswich family with a strong interest in the visual arts. His unique colour collage technique sees pencil drawings initially done on site; then overlays allow adjustment of the lay-out and detail to create a base ink drawing. This is then printed on different coloured papers and cut out, to build up the artwork in layers from the background towards the front.
