First Man (2018) - Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy star as Neil and Janet Armstrong. Portraying the lives of them both at home and his work years building up to the famous first moon landing and moon walk on 20th July 1969. This film was a little slow going at the beginning admittedly, however it certainly picked up half way through. Same could be said for the score of the film which was incidentally superb in the second half of the film. Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy played both characters excellently, with particular credit to Foy for her emotionally charged scenes. At certain times the film drew comparisons to Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks, however I felt Apollo 13 held you with more drama and suspense. A good film, however not one I would consider seeing again until on TV or a steaming service. Recommend viewing this film in an IMAX screen where possible!

FIRST MAN (2018) Son LA-LA-LAND (2017) ayant conquis le public, Damien Chazelle revient avec son acteur-fétiche Ryan Gosling dance ce biopic consacré au légendaire astronaute Neil Armstrong: ce premier homme a avoir posé le pied sur la Lune nous est ici présenté sous un angle plus intime, énonçant les caps décisifs de sa vie de famille -et de son rôle de père-, sa reconversion qui le mènera à bord de Apollo 11, et profite d’un réalisme sans fioritures. Téméraire, FIRST MAN rend incroyable, ou disons plus perceptible, cette épopée d’une conquête spatiale à ses débuts: un vrai défi que de rendre épique une aventure high-tech datant de presque 60 ans. Et pourtant, cette coexistence de l’homme avec la technologie la plus avancée de son époque qui soit tient presque de la S-F, pourvue d’un esprit de défi auquel le réalisateur Damien Chazelle y ajoute ce point de vue unique: non, ce n’est pas un space-opera, le voyage vers le satellite -comme tout test pré-mission d’ailleurs- effraie, dangereux. Le métal grince et chauffe, la vision est obstruée et le confort inexistant: l’acte n’a d’égal que cette destination spatiale, peu sûre, que l’on ne peut atteindre qu’en étant conscient de ce non-retour possible... Bien que la lutte anti-soviétique sur l’avancement de la conquête spatiale fasse rage, FIRST MAN s’attarde avec brio sur cette plongée vers l’inconnu en reconstituant parfaitement les années 60: musique, parler, on est happé par cet environnement probant, où ce père de famille en deuil nous emporte dans un parcours professionnel où nous assisteront à ses moments-clés. Des phases-test d’engins volants à l’inévitable centrifugeuse, FIRST MAN ne se fait pas simplement biopic réaliste, car il cherche à trouver l’angle de vue ciselé, la bande-son adaptée, et par-dessus tout un rythme hypnotique. Les acolytes de Neil Armstrong et certains de ses interlocuteurs proviennent d’un casting solide, permettant au film de marquer le coup dès lors qu’une scène importante se déroule: Buzz Aldrin et Michael Collins y sont interprétés avec sincérité, sans icônisation inutile. Climax quasi-muet et évocateur d’un premier homme marchant sur la Lune, FIRST MAN ne s’arrête pas à l’exploit scientifique, à la prouesse technologique, ou encore à l’Histoire qui s’écrit: comme derrière chaque grande histoire, il y a une leçon de cœur, une acceptation, une rédemption qui se passe de mots. Les mélodies envoûtantes de Justin Hurwitz complètent le tableau, achevant le long-métrage d’un retour sur Terre plus humain qu’héroïque. In 1969 the 10 year old me watched the moon landing with my mum on a little black & white TV - it's one of my earliest memories. Twenty years later (on my honeymoon) I visited Cape Canaveral (top), five years ago I saw a moon lander in Washington DC, and yesterday I watched First Man (in IMAX) - and of course I loved it. As a character study more than space adventure the slow pace was perfect and Gosling's underplayed emotion was powerfull.
