There are four types of fish scales!
Daily fish fact #585
Fish anatomy!
Fishes have a great number of fins, which help them balance themselves and move around their environment. Some fish have fins that are highly specialised for certain tasks, for example the elongated and large pectoral fins of a flying fish allow them to glide and the pelvic fins of gobies tend to be fused together to form a suction disc!
do you ever just want to try fish fins? like their actual fins. is there bone there? what about all the skin in-between the bones like is that stuff edible?

Fish anatomy!
The anal fin is a fin that's located on the underside of the body behind the anus, many fishes have this fin. Its main purpose is to stabilise the fish while it's swimming, but some fishes like the knifefishes use it exclusively for propulsion! Pufferfishes, sunfishes and boxfishes use the anal fin in tandem with the dorsal fin to swim.
Betta splendens, commonly known as the betta, is a popular fish in the aquarium trade. This species is native to the Mekong basin of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and mostly found at Chao Phraya river in Thailand. Bettas are a member of the gourami family and are known to be highly territorial. In the wild, betta spar for only a few minutes before one fish backs off. Bred specifically for heightened aggression, domesticated betta matches can go on for much longer, with winners determined by a willingness to continue fighting. In captivity, they have been selectively bred to display a vibrant array of colours and tail types.
Dumbo, or Elephant Ear, betta have oversized pectoral fins which give the impression of an elephant’s ear.

The spade tail betta is quite similar to a round tail, but rather than the tip of the caudal fin being rounded, it comes to a single point, like the spade in a deck of playing cards (though on it’s side.) The spread of a spade tail should be even on both sides of the tail.

The caudal fin of a half moon betta fish has a characteristic full 180-degree spread, like a capital D or, fittingly, a half moon. Both the dorsal and anal fins are also larger than average in halfmoon bettas. Half moons are abbreviated to HM in descriptions.
The over half moon is basically an extreme version of the half moon. It is the same tail in all ways except one: the spread, when flared, is more than 180 degrees.
Although they are striking and sought after, it’s worth noting that this unnaturally large tail can lead to issues of tearing and tail damage, often referred to as ‘blowing a tail.’
