Recording Day 4:
Adam flew in Friday night to record various overdubs for the album. Although he's the only member aside from myself to be in every iteration of Fishboy since its jump from solo project to rock band around 2002, we've lived in separate cities since 2003. Because of this distance he primarily contributes with recording, ideas through email, and the occasional tour stint.
While the bulk of this album has been meticulously written, crafted, rehearsed and prepped by the three Denton members of the group, the majority of Adam's potential contributions remained unheard, thus branding him "wildcard" status. Status's aside, I think its important to have an outside set of ears adding an extra boost of creativity, especially a trusted set with band history.
Saturday Matt's flight was delayed so we all arrived to the studio around 2pm and began fleshing out a song we knew needed a driving piano part. Once Matt was set up we spent the rest of the day recording organ and piano ending around midnight.
Recording Diary Day 3/ghost elephant monday:
I got to the studio a little before noon, we are recording once again at the Echolab in Argyle. This is the third album we've recorded at this studio (Albatross and Classic Creep, also the Nom EP) so we are very comfortable with the place. I tracked three acoustic guitar tracks and then moved on to vocals. After finishing a couple of songs I moved back to acoustic guitar and performed the album's final song in one take (!!) I then went back to recording vocals and wrapped around 11:00. We then backed up tracks and made rough mixes to practice and brainstorm with throughout the week. We originally had four days booked this weekend but were so prepared and rehearsed that we only needed three. Next weekend Adam (Sweatpants) flies in from San Francisco to collaborate with additional overdubs and mixing. Things are sounding amazing so far. This is on track to be a fantastic album.
Recording Day Two:
We had a very productive 12 hours live tracking the rest of the songs that feature electric guitar, bass, and drums (album tracks, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11) After a dinner break I came back and added additional guitar on the rock songs.
The album is being recorded/engineered by longtime friend Mathew Barnhart and it’s our first album to analog tape (NOM and IMAVOLCANO are EPs recorded to tape)
