Fisher 2hr Gothic
“You didn’t have to buy your textbook.” The lecturer said.
“You can find your textbook and readings in Fisher’s 2 hr section” She said.
Brilliant, you think. You can have your cake and eat it too. You can just do your readings after class and have a couple of extra hundred bucks for food.
A couple of weeks into your first semester you decide it’s time you did some of those readings.
A blast of arctic air conditioning slaps goosebumps onto your skin, your largest organ roasting red only moments before in end of summer Sydney sun. Scrawled in red marker on butcher’s paper plastered onto the columns at the entrance of this big brown block of a building you decipher a warning.
2HR SECTION IS A LIE.
You proceed regardless, Socialist Alternative has built up your tolerance for paranoia.
You squint at the shelves. 697.9 182… 688.9 185… Glancing upwards to the left, then right, and eventually in a tightening spiral of fear and confusion.
You stifle a shriek of frustration.
There, there in the space between 697.9 184 and 697.9 186 is the void of where your future, your promise should lay, once lay.
But right now, it’s gone.
You fling your body back to your laptop. F5 F5 F5. The rainbow wheel of doom spins its gambling of your fortunes. Your chair, all leather and wood and aged scholastic bitterness, squeaks and grumbles.
DUE 11.03.16 3:56pm
You collapsed, defeated.
Another better and more noble had conquered where you had missed your chance.
The tap tap tap of keyboards and low murmurs of librarians reverberate through and around the shelves which hold hundreds of volumes of all the tomes you do not seek.
With a final sigh of resignation, you dig into your bag for your wallet and make your way towards co-op.
Dear the rude people in Fisher library:
Just for clarification, here is a list of things which justify monopolising a desktop computer:
-doing anything which requires the use of a desktop computer
Here is a list of things that do NOT justify monopolising a desktop computer:
-texting people on your phone, using the computer as a block on which to rest your phone (while it is not logged in, not used etc.) -sleeping -using your OWN LAPTOP or using the computer as a laptop charger (while the desktop computer remains untouched but the laptopless people are deprived of using it. Those who use both laptop and desktop at once get a pass, though it’s iffy.) There is an abundance of plug sockets on campus. There are limited computers. -using the desktop as a dumping ground for your possessions, then going off for several hours, just so it’s reserved three or four hours later when you want it, but in the meantime nobody else can use it -dumping your stuff all over TWO desktops so a friend who doesn’t turn up has a computer bagsied -writing in a book/reading a textbook while not actually using the computer
It is appalling that one frequently sees several people at a time wandering around frantically trying to find a computer on which to do their assignments, while people are being rude and taking up the computers without actually using them. RUDE.

Protest the University of Sydney's Book Cull: Mass Book Borrowing Bonanza and "Read-In," 18 May
In order to protest the University of Sydney’s planned culling of half a million books from its library, a “book borrowing bonanza and read-in is planned for 18 May at 1pm in the Fisher Library Foyer. The university announced this week that it would be getting rid of the books in order to make room for a coffee cart and other indispensable paraphernalia of 21st century university life.
Desk graffiti, Fisher library, Sydney University.
When I was studying for my High School Certificate, I would venture with my father to study in the quiet cavity of Fisher Library. The space was meant to be free of distraction.
For every hour I spent studying to pass the exam, I spent another reading desk graffiti. Layer upon layer if scribes that dated back from the seventies when the furniture was first installed.
It really was a 'wall' where one person opened with a thought provoking topic like 'eat shit'. Soon a diatribe of responses ensued.
Space was of no concern. If you ran out, you simply began writing over another's thread.
Example wall
Eat Shit.
What type?
The type you love.
Choc chips.
And a dick.
You cunt.
You're a cunt.
You're mum's a cunt.
And so the tone deteriorated with every new insult.
#hashtag i have no idea what i'm doing at uni or in this god damn library
