LUCA x ALBERTO 3AM THOUGHTS PART 1

[Part 1] [Part 2]

If you watch carefully throughout the film, you can see how much of a simp Alberto is for Luca. Strangely enough, a subtle instance of his furious simping happens at the beginning of the movie when they first meet.

…Actually, it happens BEFORE THEY EVEN MEET.

Let me explain.

I present to you, The Scavenger Hunt, which I argue is part of Alberto’s genius master plan to win Luca’s heart, or at least get Luca to follow him to the island.

I’ll begin by stating that Luca’s goatfish herding spot is relatively close to Alberto’s island. It’s highly likely they’ve gotten glimpses of each other (if this is a regular place that Luca goes to). With that in mind…

About 4 minutes into the movie, you will find Luca herding his goatfish into a nice little spot where they can graze.

He sits on the rock, looking bored. Then, this strange camera POV of Luca from the back pops up. Usually, movie shots like these indicate someone or something offscreen is watching the character without their knowledge. It’s totally Alberto spying on his crush.

No?

Ok then, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Someone is clearly watching Luca, though.

Next, Giuseppe finds the alarm clock. CONVENIENTLY ON A ROCK. Hmm.

Then, he finds the playing card just chilling on the seaweed.

Not sure what the physics of a playing card in water looks like, but it looks gently placed and tucked neatly. I imagine that paper or card stock would drift around. Maybe not. Doesn’t matter. What matters is that it leads to a wrench. Like a trail of breadcrumbs…

Then, the scavenger hunt is interrupted by a boat. Luca is scared until he has an imagination where he tries to peek above the surface of the water.

And he sees a figure that looks like Alberto. Same yellowish shirt and brown shorts. Same hair poof.

Hmm… maybe he’s noticed Alberto spying on him before?

Fine, maybe not.

But later (after chatting with his parents), he’s back on the hunt. He grabs the wrench.

Sees the glass and grabs it as well.

He looks through the glass and sees the magic singing lady machine (phonograph).

It was at this point, I thought it was clear that the objects were carefully arranged in a path that led perfectly to the phonograph. What are the odds that from the boat (where they originally came from) the objects would land nicely in a neat little trail that LEADS RIGHT TO ALBERTO AND HIS ISLAND!?

Anyway BOOM, next comes the grand entrance in a diver suit. Not even FIVE SECONDS after Luca approaches the phonograph.
