Increasing evidence shows that people who rely on their voices for work are at risk of developing voice problems. Time off work due to voice stress and strain costs the UK economy £200 million each year and has a detrimental impact on the education profession and businesses which rely on a large percentage of their workforce using the voices consistently throughout the working day.
This development has implications for a third of the workforce who rely on their voices for their jobs, for example teachers and contact centre workers.
Dr Felix Schaeffler and Dr Janet Beck at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh have devised a mobile phone ‘app’ that can be used on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch allowing workers to record voice samples and questionnaire data and submit them for analysis by experts. The experts can then provide feedback and advice on what can be done to limit future damage.
