Is there a difference between multishipping and "pairing the spares"?

you see, you multiship people who actually have good dynamics+relationships and good development, eg. why i ship pearlshipping and if they’re a nevermet ship you ship them together because there’s a very high chance they’re compatible, eg fancyfashionshipping

pairing the spares is mostly done in fanfics tho, it’s like having one big list of characters and going “well i put all my otps together, but i haven’t paired X with anyone, so i’m gonna make them love Y somehow even if it’s a totally random pairing”. it’s v unnecessary and tedious like bruh if you have 20+ ships in your fanfic you need to sit down
