So, I ended up with a chance to go back and grab the rest of the OGO pigeons from where the first 7 were rescued. There were 13 more, which means we have 20 total now.

I’m going to have to rehome some of them, because 20 is way too many, like 2x as many as I feel comfortable with in the pea pen (I think this would be a great pen for them if they were the only denizens, but not shared space), but I had to get them out of where they were because their conditions were deplorable and they had no flight space at all.

We’re probably going to try to move out almost all the reds, and the black banded ones, which would take us to 8. I’m waiting to hear back with a photo of the 2 hens that had pair bonded because I will keep them regardless of color, as they won’t produce babies, so 10 max which will be much more manageable.

PS: if you are or know anyone in or around SE michigan that keeps pigeons in responsible conditions that might be interested in a few old german owls, drop me a line!

I have a theory, that when people choose an animal to keep as a pet, they choose an animal whose personality and care routines complement and support a need of the human. Like getting a prescription for a psychosocial vitamin deficiency.

For example, I am a depressed and reclusive bitch, but taking the dog Charlie out for four walks a day is a great way to meet people and his outgoing little ass does most of the introductory small talk for me. Husbeast is a gregarious person who has difficulty maintaining his living space but the cat Mochi's housebound nature has kept him company during WFH and helped him figure out how to organize the living space to suit his needs (small mammals like rats and guinea pigs have much the same benefits). Everyone I know who keeps invertebrates and reptiles has self-care and time management difficulties but having to be responsible for a tank animal helps that.

The people I don't understand are Bird People. What psychosocial vitamin does bird provide?

I'm a comfortably asocial person who keeps pigeons because they provide more complex social interaction than mammalian pets, without being annoying or demanding like fellow humans.

Seconding Quail here. I am very easily overwhelmed and exhausted by emotions. So, people? Too many social constructs and emotional expectations. Mammals are okay, but on average I don’t really find them enjoyable to be around? Maybe because they’re too needy... idk. I’ve never had a cat, so idk how they are, but I’m more okay with them on average.

But bird? Especially pigeons? Just needy enough to get my ass up and pay attention to them, and are hell bent on making you love them. But they don’t require the same amount of I guess... emotions? I’ve heard them compared to a mix between a reptile and cat, and tbh, that’s like the perfect description. I’m not entirely sure why, but that just fits ya know??

So yeah, I’m not entirely sure why, but birds are just great fam.
