Ranty rant rant time. Though it's less rant and more vent.
My plan for next year is to start a Masters of Research in History and my topic is something along the lines of youth subcultures in the post-war period and how the Cold War era paranoia and political strife of Britain in the 50s-70s is reflected, intentionally or not, in the science fiction of the time.
And that all sounds great, but every time I go to read an article or chapter in a book, or whenever I try to do any work on it, I'm just not getting anywhere. I read a paragraph and it goes over my head. I try to narrow down a piece of research I want to do and I just can't do it, and I'm so scared that I've lost my ability to research.
Which is ridiculous because 70% of my life now is historical research, but it's not been the acadmeic kind for so long, so what if I have lost that ability? Getting this MRes has been my dream for years and now I'm actually getting into it (I'm not applying until next year, but I need to know what I'm doing hence the research now), I'm so scared that I won't be able to do it.
Part of me is saying go speak to the university, but I'm terrified they're going to laugh me out the door. "Oh you want to look at the links between Cold War paranoia and the puppet show Captain Scarlet?" so I'm put off going to speak to them. But I know that it will probably ease some of my fears and they might be able to help. But that anxiety will stop me from reaching out (at least for the moment).
I'm so stressed about it because it's something I really want, I just don't know if I'll be able to move past this roadblock and that makes me so upset. Hence the vent. If I actually do get further along, I'll be so happy. Like I know an MRes isn't going to be easy. God the amount of tears I cried during my BA could have filled the Pacific. But it hurts when it feels like a huge hole in the road I can't jump over.

I've been reading Artemis Fowl since 2003 or 2004ish. After Eternity Code came out but before Opal Deception. And like, I have all the books, but it's ridiculous.
The first six book covers follow a set pattern, and that's fine, it's cool, it's familiar and they're all the same pattern like books in the same series should be.
But then for the last two books it's just all
Completely different! They're even different from each other who does that.
What happened was for the seventh book they did a cover redesign and they reprinted and changed the covers on all the previous books so they'd match but I already have all the previous books and I'm not in a position to buy them all again just so the covers will match and it's really frustrating that they don't match.
At least the eighth book sort of matches the first six but now the seventh book is just sitting there like an awkward turtle.
It's even an awkward turtle on my bookshelf and they don't even match at all. Harry Potter kept the same design for all seven books and they're nice and neat and not awkward turtles on my shelf and why couldn't Artemis Fowl do the same?
