Book Log 2023 - #5 Achtsam Morden by Karsten Dusse
»Ist was passiert?«

So, I edited, designed the cover, and formatted this book (Adventures in GameWorld), as well as made the graphics for promo. I hoe people see this and give the book a try, Robert and I worked really hard on it. Our first review was amazing, so I shared it with y’all.
“Better than Ready Player One." - C.z
Synopsis:
Jasmine Brings home a new retro-looking game from GameWorld, and when she and her brother Bobby start playing it, they get sucked into it via a portal, and upon awakening inside the game, they realize that they have been turned into anthropomorphic animals. Jasmine is now a cat, and her brother is a bear, and they can both do a myriad of cool attacks that cost little health when used in battle, say, against some giant wasps, perhaps? As they meet up with new allies along the way, like Skate the crow, Jasmine and Bobby will have to play the game with their lives on the line. Will they win? Find out, in Adventures in GameWorld: Game Start.

Twelve Rules for Life by Jordan B Peterson
AO3 Warnings: nonfiction, self-help, here be political discourse
It's impossible to talk about this book without mentioning politics, but I don't really care, so knock it off. Set whatever preconceived notions and political positions you have from this book. It's an excellent book.
The prose is a perfect combination of flowery exposition and direct command that makes you feel what the author is saying is important and that you can and want to do what is recommended. He uses numerous rhetorical techniques well to get you to keep reading, chiefly talking about rules from later chapters but only briefly enough to know that you want to read more about it. He references stories everyone knows, Disney and the Bible, while also referencing with as much cavalier attitude stories that you don't know — Russian literature mostly — which establishes him as smarter than you, while also making you feel like you should be better educated, like The Brothers Karamazov and Gulag Archipelago should be mandatory high school reading along with The Great Gatsby and The Diary of a Young Girl. It's exactly what you should expect from "expert" nonfiction.
The rules themselves are presented excellently. Each rule starts from a firm psychological basis, expands to cover philosophy, then closes with a few easy daily habits that would eventually shape the person Jordan Peterson would like the reader to become — that, due to the layout of the chapter, the reader also wants to be. Of course, the rules are deceptively simple; like God's 400-odd common law commandments to the Israelites being repurposed by Paul, they teach principles that should be applied to everything in your life rather than statutes to follow to the letter. Petting a cat and standing up straight is only the beginning.
None of the rules are new or unusual, of course. They're common sense, things we've been told for decades. The only reason this book is exciting for presenting them at all is that no one else is talking about it. That said, it's definitely something you could reread and get something new from it.
Five Stars: I'll reread it
