Five Nights at Freddy's story theory
Okay just to let everyone know, this is my own theory on the entire story of what happened in the three games of Five Nights at Freddy’s. Bear with me because this is a little lengthy.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!
I’ll start with the facts. We all know that the animatronics are possessed by the souls of the dead children. We all know that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 takes place before The first game, and then the third one takes place 30 years after the first game. We all know the killer is represented as the Purple man. And we all know that at the end of the third game the Purple man met his end and becomes Springtrap. Now I can start with my theory, which revolves around the Phone guy being the Purple man.
The story begins with the very first restaurant known as Fredbear’s Family Diner. This restaurant was mentioned by the phone guy in FNAF 2 as the very first restaurant, before the first Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria. Fredbear’s Diner was started as a partnership between some guy named either Fred or Mr. Fredbear(we’ll just call him Fred from now on), and the Phone Guy. It was supposed to be a place for kids to have fun. Along with this restaurant, was two hybrid animatronic suits and one puppet. They worked as both animatronics and suits for people to wear, those suits was Golden Freddy and Golden Bonnie. The animatronic part of the suits mainly just walk around from one table to another via special panels. The Puppet mainly acted as a Jack in the Box and gave prizes. The Golden Freddy suit was mainly worn by Fred, while the Golden Bonnie suit was mainly worn by Phone Guy. One day Fred and Phone Guy had a fight and in since technically Fred came up with the idea and owned the place, he fired Phone Guy. So as revenge, Phone Guy drove by the Diner, and killed a lonely kid outside the restaurant, probably using the Golden Bonnie suit to lure him. This caused a scandal and Fred had no choice but to shut down the Diner. But he managed to sell it to a company called Fazbear Entertainment, and they turned the restaurant into a Chuck E. Cheese lookalike called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria.
Now when Phone Guy heard of this he was furious that Fred got a lot of money from selling the place, but deep down he secretly wanted to once again feel the rush he got from killing. So he managed to get hired into the Pizzaria as a security guard, where he saw the improvements. There was now four full on animatronics that was more advanced than the golden suits. There was a new Freddy and Bonnie, along with new characters named Chica and Foxy the pirate. Phone guy became fonded with Foxy as it reminded him of his childhood of pretending to be a pirate. So for awhile he didn’t go through with his plan, until he saw the Puppet. He felt some weird vibes coming from the Puppet, as if the Puppet was watching him, and thinking. Little did he know, the child he murdered earlier had possessed the Puppet, and the was now trying to find his killer. This brought back Phone guy’s psychotic need to kill, and reminded him of why he worked there in the first place. He managed to find that the company kept the two golden suits in the back room, and used the Golden Freddy suit to lure five children into the restaurant, where he proceeded to murder them. He managed this since he was a security guard and knew the right time to do this. Not only that, so he would get away scott-free, he framed Fred by planting evidence and he used the Golden Freddy suit. At first it was only known that the kids were missing, until some parents saw what looked like mucus and blood coming from the animatronics and a foul smell from them too. When this was discovered, Fred was charged with the crime and was imprisoned. The restaurant then was shutdown due to the bad reputation. Even though Phone guy was satisfied that he got Fred in jail, the need to kill still didn’t go away, in fact it only grew due to the thrill of getting away with it, so he decided to stay with the company for another chance to strike again. Unknown to him and everyone else, in the night the kids were killed, the Puppet discovered them first and was saddened and angry that he failed to stop the killer. So he put the bodies in the suits and the the children’s souls possessed the four animatronics and Golden Freddy, so the Puppet would have more help and to give the others a chance for revenge.
Fast forward to 1987, a second and bigger Fazbear’s Pizzaria was established. Along with the new restaurant was new animatronics. First there was newer versions of the original four animatronics, though the kids was too rough with the new Foxy and it was now used as a build of tear up toy and now known as the Mangle. The Puppet was still there, with its prize area, and a new one called Balloon boy. The Phone guy was tasked with training new employees and security guards, one of them was Jeremy Fitzgerald. It was Jeremy’s week that the Puppet and the five haunted animatronics begun to stalk the restaurant at night to find the killer. Not only that, the Toy animatronics’ radar system was tampered with by the phone guy so he could kill again. Jeremy managed to survive five nights by wearing a Freddy mask and flashing the lights, as the mask fools the animatronics both old and new and the lights reset their systems. This also worked on the old ones because the kids spirits wasn’t strong enough to overcome the animatronics programming. However, this didn’t work on the Puppet, as the spirit that resided in it was experienced and strong enough to not be affected. What did affect it was the prize box music, as it calmed the spirit because it reminded it of the happier times when it was alive. During these nights, Jeremy experienced visions that was from the past (possibly because the spirits was trying to communicate) and realized what was going on. He set out to try to find the killer during the day, and told Phone guy about his experience. Phone guy was worried if Jeremy managed to find out, it would get him imprisoned. So after the fifth night, Phone guy moved Jeremy to the day shift. He then rigged the Mangle to attack Jeremy, resulting in the Bite of ‘87. With Jeremy losing his frontal lobe, he couldn’t reveal the secret. It was this, and the animatronics acting strange towards adults during the day that brought back his need to kill. So Phone guy took this opportunity to kill another 5 kids, this time using the Golden Bonnie suit. All of this made the spirits be filled with hatred because they failed again. The company managed to cover up the kids deaths, but because of the Bite, the Pizzaria had to be shutdown once again and the toy animatronics was scraped.
Fast forward to 1993 or 1995. A smaller Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzaria opened. The four original animatronics was repaired with parts from the toy ones. The Puppet was put away, but was still in the restaurant. Once again, phone guy took charge as a security guard to see if he could kill again, but discovered for himself that what Jeremy was talking about was true, the animatronics was haunted. He survived for the first three nights, but on the fourth night the power ran out for him and the animatronics got in. This made him ran to the back room and put on the Golden Bonnie suit. This protected him from the spirits because the it reminded them of their death. Phone guy then laughs at his victory, but his breath caused the spring locks in the suit to mess up, therefore killing him. The Puppet realized they got their revenge, but the other spirits was too full of hate not to notice. And because the spirit in the Puppet caused the other spirits to possess the animatronics in the first place, the Puppet can't cross over. This is why the five animatronics except the Puppet tried to get Mike Schmidt. Mike experienced visions from the Puppet and tried to find out the secrets, but was fired. In the end, the restaurant had too much of a bad reputation to succeed, and was shutdown for good.
30 years later, a new establishment called Fazbear Fright: The Horror Attraction was made based on the legends of the restaurant. The owners searched far and wide to gather what survived from ages ago, until they found the Golden Bonnie suit. Now known as Springtrap, it was going to be one of the main scares for the attraction. Little did they know was that Springtrap was possessed. The security guard of that place(YOU) realized this and then experienced visions from the spirits that possessed what was left of the animatronics. The Puppet then takes the player to a spirit realm that resembles the restaurant and shows him that they need his help. He begins to go back in time, but in another plane of existence, to different time periods of the restaurants to guide the children’s souls to have peace. This helps them realize who exactly is their enemy, and then goes back to the time of Phone guy’s death, but this time with purpose. The killer dies, just like before, but this time the children then cross over, finally able to rest in peace. Finally, the security guard confronts Springtrap, locks it up, then burn the place to the ground. With this, the story of Five Nights at Freddy’s is concluded.
Again, this is just my take on the entire franchise. But whether or not the phone guy is the killer doesn’t matter, what matters is that the killer is vanquished, and the children are set free. Thank you, Scott Cawthon, for sharing with us this wonderful experience through your games. Looking forward to newer games that would give us the same excitement that FNAF brought us.
