“Mad Dash For Freedom Fails, Swindler Called "Poor Loser",” Montreal Star. August 5, 1930. Page 3. ---- If he is winning. Joseph Stearn, 2131 St. Andre street, is willing to play a game of chance, but if the odds are against him, he runs. That is what Stearn did this morning when Judge F. T. Enright, sitting in the Court of Special Sessions, announced his intention of sending Stearn "up for time" because he operated a "fixed" roulette wheel.
Among the thousands who flocked to the St. Hubert airport to witness the R-100 last Friday, was Stearn, with an eye to business and a spurious roulette wheel under his arm. He was not on the field long before a gambling clientele placed their money on the table, but invariably they lost. The wheel was always the winner.
The reason why the contrivance failed to pay a return, Provincial Detective Berthiaume ascertained, was because it was equipped with an apparatus which enabled operator to bring the spinning wheel to a sudden halt. Stearn was arrested. When arraigned he pleaded not guilty and was released on bail pending his trial this afternoon.
With the impression that he would. be allowed the option of a fine, he pleaded guilty before Judge Enright today. "Why this is a pure swindle," exclaimed the court after the scheme was explained to him.. The accused deserves to be sent up for time."
Before the magistrate completed these utterances, Stearn had disappeared from the court room and was dashing through the corridor, with Sergeant Raymond and Detectives Berthiaume and Rapin in hot pursuit Stearn was overtaken at St. James and St. Gabriel streets and brought back to the court room.
"I see you are a poor loser," commented His Honor, as he sentenced the prisoner to three months in jail and a fine of $200. If he fails to pay the the fine an additional term of three months will be given.
Don't you love how England only got a draw against Germany cause of a penalty at the 88th minute that shouldn't have been given.
Now who's celebrating a draw?
