I just love that our son has had the opportunity to play with kids from a variety of age groups. When o was teaching first grade I always thought it was strange we stick 30 some kids in a room who are all going through the same developmental milestones. How can they act as leaders if everyone is around the same level? How can they have mentors if even the smartest kid in class doesn't have the emotional intelligence yet to lead. I brought in 4th grade buddies once a week to read. I also brought in kindergarteners so they had opportunities to lead.
